classic insurance
Just bought a '71 T Targa last June and switched last week from Haggerty to American National for all my insurance; home, cars, etc.
For the Porsche; $47 per half all season coverage and 7,500 mi/yr. I couldn't pass it up. Company is known as ANPAC but not sure of their web-site. Alex |

I'm also with Hagerty. Anyone ever filed a claim with them? Was it painless?

What kind of driving does Haggerty allow? Can you ever drive to work or to run errands? Or it is super restrictive like some of the other classic car ins companies?
EDIT: Just called Hagerty - they say the car can only be used for club events, parades, occasional pleasure drives only. Not for using the car to out for dinner. And, importantly, not for using the car to get to work. Pretty restrictive. I'd hate to get into an accident at 8:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. Monday - Friday while covered by that insurance policy. Haggerty. I had a rock thrown up by a car in front of me and crack the windshield. They promptly authorized my wrench to replace it with a OEM replacement from Porsche......no questions.
My rates did not go up. Very nice people to deal with. Mike

How about insurance for a classic daily driver? I split my commuting between my '72 911T and my '70 Beetle. I just had a very rude awakening through Allstate, a company I have been with since I started driving in 1976. My Bug got rear-ended and they tried to total it for less than half its local fair-market value. I had to do my own market research and present my case to them, along with thinly veiled threats of legal action, to get them to fix it. Does anyone offer an "agreed value" policy for these kinds of cars that are used daily, at an affordable rate?

I too spoke with Hagerty, and while I was happy with their premium and coverage, they were very restrictive in their driving allowances. I asked if I would be covered should I want to drive the car on a 500 mile trip to northern Cal and back for the weekend and they said that this did not fit their program. I insistede that this would be for pleasure reasons only and they told me that once I got to my destination that I would be using the car to go out to dinner and to the store and what not and that It was not the kind of car they wished to insure. What good is coverage if your not allowed to stop anywhere?. I will check with ANPAC, but referrals to any other companies would be greatly appreciatted. Thanks everyone

I kow there are few companies and we have dicussed this before. However, this is the kind of thread that current info can be exchanged.
I am also interested in the alternatives. I have a classic car and the 911 with USAA along with 3 others giving me a pretty good discount on the extra cars. But it ain't no 47 dollars. More like the $185, but twice yearly. I don't know if I'd buy the 47 dollar stuff, but I'm all ears (or eyes, as it were). |

I pay like 580 a year on my 83 911 SC with a 1,000 deductable. This is for full coverage insuarnce with towing and roadside assistance with up to 7,500 miles per year and I can drive it anywhere I want to and not have to worry. I bought the car to go out to dinner, go to the movies and drive to work on sunny days. It's worth the extra $300 bucks to know you can drive it anywhere. I use liberty mutual and have for the last 5 years. They are great on claims too.

The "driving to work" coverage under a "Classic car" policy has been brought up a few times. I still haven't seen any company that offers this....limited mileage or not.
As little as I drive my 911 I wish there were at least a coverage that fell between Classic and Standard, daily driver insurance. There seems to be quite a market for it.

I find it interesting that Hagarty was so hard on some of you guys. When I added the 911 to my policy I told them that it would be about 3,000 miles a year of pleasure use and there was no question. "Pleasure use" is such a broad term but I see it including just about everything except daily commuting. IMO, any other driving I'm doing is pleasure driving.

This post was / is very helpful to me too as i am presently costing out ins. on a car i am looking at. Through my insurance co., it would be $808 a year (in addition to my two other vehicles) for full coverage, no restrictions. However, i think this is high as it is almost as much as my other two combined (okay, maybe i am exaggerating) and it (I think) is a little-known company: Liberty Mutual or American Mutual, something like that - and since i have never had to file a claim, don't know what they are like ... Any other suggestions would be helpful. Hagerty's gave me a great rate, but with restrictions - and i hate those

It occurred to me that Hagerty might not pay a claim I make if my car is stolen from a grocery store parking lot. In that case, I may as well not have any insurance at all. I use it all the time for running errands, parking downtown, etc. Maybe I better call Geico instead.

The biggest risk I see in having "standard" insurance on a classic car is how much the insurance company thinks your car is worth. While I was going through the ringer with Allstate over the value of my '70 Bug, there was some other poor guy who posted that his 911 got totaled for some ridiculously low value. It makes me very leary concerning what Allstate may see as the value of my '72 911T. I intend to push Allstate on this issue once my Bug is repaired and safely back in my hands (I don't want to become more of a P.I.A. than I already have been and inspire them to stop repairs). Rick, you're right - it would be nice to have something available between the restrictive Hagerty style policies and standard insurance that isn't geared towards older, or rarer cars.
