MSD Expert Needed - HELP!
Okay, I put an MSD 5 (would have preferred a 6al but this was available at a good price), and an MSD blaster 2 coil with a ballast resistor on my 69T. The unit works well. I can notice the difference in response through the lower RPM range. As expected, the Tach doesn't read properly now below 3000 RPM.
I got an MSD tach adapter and spliced the white to the white and red to the red. No change... Any tips? Jim

Jim,
What did you do with the existing 3-wire ballast unit for the tach on the relay/fuse panel?

See, that's why I needed an expert...
Don't know what this is. The Blaster 2 coil comes with a ballast resistor. I double checked with MSD and let them know the parts and application and verified that the ballast resistor had to be run in between the 12V power supply and the + coil side. This has been done. Something about applying resistance on the power running to the high voltage coil. I didn't touch anything else. Being an MSD 5, it's a relatively simple job, and the original setup can be restored in minutes. I just realized however that I spliced the power for the MSD 5 into the 12V line before the ballast resistor, but the MSD tech instructions show it being connected to the coil + and only the main power going through the resistor. Not sure if this will be part of the problem or not. Jim

I tried a tach adapter as well on my '73 and my '71 when I installed msd6al, neither of them worked.
I ended up having to send in my tach to north hollywood speedometer to get it converted. |
