CV Joint Grease Quanity?

"...place plenty of grease in and around the boot." (101 Projects for Your Porsche 911). Can someone tell me how much is "plenty"? Full? 75%? Thanks from a real beginner, Ron.

Ever since I started dealing with CV joints, the conventional wisdom has been to PACK the joint with grease. To this day, the majority of mechanics I trust deny that the small tube that comes with the boot is enough. Not in the real world, they say. I find that if you pack the boot clear full, then there is no air to allow the boot to flex. So, I leave some air in there. And it doesn't matter whether you have a clamp on the small-diameter shaft end of the boot. Grease will not escape there. The important clamp is the large one. Also, grease will come out where the paper gasket thingie goes, if you don't use a good or new gasket.

Short answer: lots of grease, but not 100% full. And use the right grease. This is a high-pressure application.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm using Swepco Poly grease. The old gasket came off intact when I was cleaning the joint but I had ordered a new one when I ordered the new boot so you answered another question I was thinking about. I'll use the new gasket. Thanks again. I've read a number of your posts in the past. Ron

over 100% -- i.e. make it mound up a bit over the plane of the flange.
