G50 Transmission Rebuild documentation
Just in the process of finding a 6 speed G50 for my '89, I will end up taking the transmission apart (it needs to be shortened by about 63 mm a la fitting a G50 to a pre-87 911) and was wondering if there was any documentation that would assist with the disassembly and reassembly?

I got the factory manual for the G50 and read it several times. It is sort of confusing to me. That is the only info I found on the G50. It isn't that hard to take apart and put back together. You will need a couple tools and a big a$$ puller. I can send you some pics if you want but they look like tranny pics. If you need a mach. shop to shorten it I know a couple that are great.

I hope you are shortening the bellhousing and mainshaft by 28mm only.

Total difference in length between the 5 speed and 6 speed is ~63 mm, excluding the very different nose piece that has the rubber doughnut in it...which I assume I can remove as it does not appear to form part of the actual transmission case (but it is part of the casting for sure). I am counting on the feedback from others that there is about 25-35mm of space between the chassis in a 1989 and the 5 speed G50 nosepiece, plus taking about 25-30 mm off of the bell housing ought to be pretty close....
Why do you use the 28 mm number? Is that what is "available" to remove from the G50 bell housing? Thanks Dennis

28mm (or 1.1") is the standard amount removed from bellhousing AND mainshaft for this conversion.

Thanks for the data point....just one more question? In your experience, can more be removed without undue problems or is the 28 mm all that is needed to fit a 5 speed G50 into a pre-87 911?
I worry about the depth of the splines on the input shaft, plus starter location would need to be dealt with. Thanks Dennis

28mm is the standard to allow this conversion. More than 28mm, and you won't be left with enough spline. The later model (large diameter) mainshaft MAY allow a bit more, IF the splines are extended a bit.
