MIG advice - no, not the jets

Guys, I'm looking into a MIG welder to use around the shop...
(welding cracked rear sway bar mounts, fabricating a roll bar
and targa stiffeners, etc...)

Any advice re: Miller vs Lincoln, and re: sizes?

I'm looking at the smaller end Miller: 115 volt, up to3/16 inch,
20% duty cycle. But am debating versus the dual voltage
larger model which can handle up to 1/4 inch and has a longer
duty cycle. I want to spend as little as possible, but
do not want to get too small a unit and regret it later.

We're talking $600 vs $825 vs $1100 (3/16, 1/4, 1/4 dual voltage)

Is a 3/16 unit reasonable for general auto and shop?

Spike

A search on this will bring up at least 5 threads in the last year. Read them and you should get a good idea of what will work for you.

Do a search on Daytona Mig,they are a company in Daytona Beach Fl. that makes mig and tig welders along with cutting equipment.Everything I have heard locally about the company is they build good stuff and decent price, also the website has prices for both new and reconditioned or trade in models.

I can tell you that you do not want to skimp too much on a welder...meaning I would at least get a 220v unit, they do not cost that much more. I got a lincoln 175+ mig w/all attachments for right @ $700 and change, and it can do anything that I can need or use around here. Just my .02 worth....you don't want to get a 110v unit and then find out that you need a better unit to do thicker metals. buy it once and be done.
