Anyone deleted the rear bumper blocks?

Have any of you guys delted the rear bumper blocks on your accordian bumpered cars? I have thought about removing mine, filling the holes left behind and running the rubber trim strip up to the license plate. Any pics out there of this mod?

Do a search. It has been done.

Justin,
89911 had a good thread on deleting the bumper pads, rubber strips and filling all the holes. I'm 80% through this project myself and I have documented it well. I hope to have the shock mounts welded in this weekend so I can fill holes and get ready for paint. I'll post when complete. Let me know if you have specific questioons.

I just did mine, but did the cheap/easy filling of holes. I went to Lowes and picked up black plastic plugs and just popped them in....they sit flush and look ok. Certainly not as pretty as weld and paint, but better than the ugly rubber pads.

I must confess. I used a "liquid metal" type product and filled and sanded. Then I went to my local autobody paint supply place and had them mix the paint in a rattle can and painted it. It is not perfect, but it is pretty bloody close.

liquid metal ...damn fine idea! Thanks, Jeff!

BTW, what did you use to keep the end of the rubber trim on the bumper? Glue? A screw? My trim wants to curl up and away from the bumper and I doubt that glue will be strong enough.

I'm just cheap from time to time!

Removing the bumper pads is very easy and you just need to fill the holes, find another license plate light location, and paint. Removing the additional rubber strip is much more involved. John, how is your project coming?

Rufblackbird 01-11-2005 07:25 PM

By doing this, I'm guessing the license plate lights no longer exist?

Look for GeorgeK's car...he did this and "fab'ed" up some sweet license lights...It it looks really slick...

Yes, but someone posted a while ago about lp lights that take the place of the lp mounting screws. Someone got that web address? I'm gonna need those too.

BTW, what did you guys do to keep the edge of the rubber trim from curling out?

George,

Great look. I have always seen the big rubber buggy bumpers as a focal point which detracts from the car's lines. Without them, looks sweet! Nice job - like it is supposed to look.

djmcmath 01-11-2005 09:12 PM

GeorgeK -- that car is sweet. Orange, with black Carrera script? Simply perfect. The bumper delete detail just completes a beautiful package.

Anyone have a source for the little licence plate lights like GeorgeK's car?
