What shop has the blaster. A guy on the local board is looking for a blasting shop in Seattle.
The frosting looks great! Agree on the BBQ paint. I used the bbq paint when I repainted my engine tin. I'll use it on Fuchs if I ever paint them.

What brand and type of paint are you using? Those wheels are incredible! I need to repaint mine and I want it to last.

Looks great! Besides patience and 'very carefully...' is there any particular trick to get the masking perfect all the way around the wheel?

There's another post about this, use electrical tape for first line as it follows contours better. easy on, easy off.

Looks like you may have to give up the day job. Those are superb wheels. When can you book mine in for treatment? It's almost worth paying to ship them over to the States!!!

I admire Al Reed's work but those are flat out AWESOME ! The polished / blasted contrast is impressive.

After having it recommended on the board a couple of years ago, I recomend you use pin striping tape for truly perfect concave and convex masking... it's super flexible and leaves a sharp edge. Once your edges are perfect then fill in with normal masking tape.

.....so the frosted/rough RSR type finish is done via a glass bead blast followed by ???? ( nothing so far?.....matte clear coat?).

Any advice on the specifics of glass bead work...pressure/distance/media size, etc?

I have had them mounted on my car for 800 miles or so... no protective coating over the blasted surfaces. I have not done anything special to maintain them...just washed it once. So far so good. The blasted areas seem to be holding up just fine and are not attracting more dirt than the other areas. If you had a lot of brake dust or other grease/grime, that would probably be a different story. I will be anodizing the next set that I do to see how I like the looks of that....when all is said and done, I may end up anodizing these too.

Those wheels have been done on my targa for a few years now. They still look really good but I am getting tired of the polished look so I will refinish them soon. Like I said before, I did not put any protective coating on them. They still clean up very nice with wheel cleaner but I prefer the toned down look of the anodizing. here is a pic of a wheel done exactly the same way but it was anodized. So the steps here are...

1. Polish
2. Mask and media blast the designated areas
3. Anodize the whole wheel
4. Mask and paint

Anodizing is relatively cheap. I think my local shop charges me $200 and I was able to do 8 wheels for that price.

I just noticed the wheels were on the kitchen counter back in '05. Well, they were clean enough to eat off of.

So, the deep six shown above has the clear anodizing? Just to be clear about this. :D
