G50 Tranny Rebuild $$$

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for a G50 transmission rebuild? While I know the G50 has the rattle issue, mine has become quite noticeable. Sounds like the Studebaker my Dad use to drive haulin yard debris. I’m guessing in the $1500-$2000 range.

I would guess higher, those are 915 numbers, the G50 has the dog teeth and the gear as a single unit (so I am told, never actually saw one) so the cost is higher.

Plus it really depends on what is gone, one thing for sure the more you drive it, the more that will be wrong. True for most cars broken or not.

I think Vertex has an exhange program - I would get a second opinion on the tranny - Try calling my wrench - Joe at Germantech - He's a little bit of a haul for you - but much less than $1500 - $2000.

I don't think it's your tranny

Figure on $600-$750 for labor plus the cost of whatever parts are necessary.

Jeremy...hum???? I think a second opinion may be in order also. Dave White Sr. never called back on an estimate after hearing noise. That always discourages me from a customer service standpoint. Golly, if Verizon would fix my email I'd send you an email....lol. Shock squeak we heard at the DE is a bushing as far as Jack and I can tell. Disappeared when car gets hot. The plot thickens.

I tried to email you too and tell you to check the swaybar bushing too - one person boune the car = the other try and locate the noise... It was bounced back to me.

noise is actually rear passenger side....weird huh...because I was standing next to you when we bounced it and heard it....sounded like front driver side...too much DE track noise I guess....I'll send you some good pics of you in the DE....Jack had a couple good shots too...Jack’s brother made me think twice about carrying a second pair of under shorts in that GT3….that was fun Sunday.

they usually just need new syncro rings. if you take one apart just to fix the classic G50 gear rattle, you won't find anything. still, it'll probably be around $2500 if a shop does the whole job including R+R.

JWW - his isn't the classic spring rattle under load G-50 noise - it's only when you push in the clutch at idle - not moving. Makes a sound like an old willys jeep kind of a grinding whirring...

Sounds like a throw out bearing. Mind did the same thing for over 3 years.

That's what I said - but I believe he has documentation that it was replaced as well as the g-50 clutch fork update... Not to long ago.

If you disengage the clutch and you're not moving, isn't the tranny pretty much idle? It sure sounds like a throw out bearing.

Thanks for the posts everyone.....sounds like it needs to be eye-balled and depending on what's found, the price range is wide....considering its a weekend driver, may factor in to what I have done.

Hum....maybe JW needs a vacation in Florida? Wonder if his tool box can make it thru Airport Security?

Actually, the noise is with clutch OUT (not depressed) and not moving when the rattle occurs. Dave’s estimate is $3500 which is a complete rebuild estimate. So if some parts are not at issue, then the cost is less. So if I decide to crack it open, I need to be prepared to deal with that type of cost. Jack and I will probably pay Joe at Germantech a visit next week for a second opinion. Even Dave Sr. seemed to say this can wait but will probably get louder.

clutch out in neutral, at idle noises are generally mainshaft bearing related. i haven't heard that yet in a G50, but 901s were famous for that.

Jason,

If you decide to open it, post images of every step. That hasn’t been on the Forum yet with a G50.

BTW, I agree with second+ opinions on an issue like this. At this stage the diagnosis is very subjective. Also, it is a sign of a good shop when you get a “worst case” estimate and work down from there. Too often all you get is a price for R&R, disassembly and inspection.

Best,
Grady

Question for John Walker, (sorry don't want to hijack your thread, but my question is along the same line except with a 915 tranny).

I get the same type of noise. At stop, tranny in neutral with clutch out, I get a rattling noise. Still in neutral, I push the clutch to the floor, the noise goes away. I had the tranny rebuilt two years ago and replaced all the bearings, syncros, sliders, dog teeth and clutch when the wrench had it open.

Any ideas?

there is always a gear rattle to some extent. some more noticeable than others. you may have to get up close to the trans, but it's there. there IS clearance between all the opposing sets of gears, one driven against one loose. cars with all the sound proofing torn out will noisier than those with 3 sets of mats. deciding whether it's a non-problem or not, would be in the ear of the tech who has sufficient transmission experience. could be normal, could be a bearing problem.

When I first put the G50 in my car I thought there was something wrong with it. But then I realized the noise was normal and now I don't really hear it. So IMO unless you are having a bigger problem with your tranny than noise I wouldn't touch it.

I think I posted pics of my tranny when I shortened it. Maybe 2 years ago.
