Question Removable Car Radio

I have a 79 SC that I will use on the street and on the track (50/50).

I'm trying to remove as much weight as possible from this car but I want to keep a car radio/cd player.

Would any one know if removable car radio (popular in the 80's and early 90's) are still available.

Most current ones use just the removable face plate and leave the rest.

This may be more hassle than it is worth but the current din chassis are easile removed then you left with a couple of connectors and the antenna. Not as clean but fills your need. An altenative would be to search Ebay

Yeah, the radio sits in a metal chassis and pulls out in 10 seconds. Esp. easy if you have the little tool that goes into the openings and releases the tabs (if not, regular old nails work, too).

The issue would be with the wiring. However, you could easily fab up a "quick release" wiring harness. Could make taking it in and out a maybe 30 second affair.

That being said, you'd stil have all the wiring in the car, the speakers, etc. - doesn't seem worth it on a street/track car.

Thanks guys,

I don't think it is worth the effort to remove the radio for each track sessions.

I found a brand (cheap Chinese stuff) who still makes car radios with Pull Out chassis, but no CD player. Any way, I don't want this stuff in my car.

I will try to find a good vintage pull out radio. Otherwise I'll put myself on a diet!

Walter.

I would also assume that the four speakers weigh twice as much as the radio itself. I would not bother, unless losing the entire system.
