For some reason I thought finding a set of flat 15x6 Fuchs would be an easy task.
When I look at posts from a few month ago I see very presentable sets advertised for $600, and deep 6s running around $1000 for a set of four. Now, I'm finding $600-800 will buy a flat set that needs refinishing and a set of deep 6s at $1200. Is there a Fuchs shortage or are the prices heading north with early car prices?

It's not inflation, it's hoarding and price gouging, followed by "me too" greed. BTW, a few months ago I bought 2 6x15's in good condition but need refinishing for $100 each. I could've bought them for even less; however, I didn't want to beat the seller down too badly because he's one of the good Porsche people out there.

Yeah, I had a guy offer me a set of 6s and 7s for $100 as a friendly gesture. Unfortunately it wasn't what I was after.

I think Jim hit it right on the head. I've been on this BBS for a few years now. Everytime a thread gets started about how nice something is, the price immediately starts sky rocketing. We need to start a thread on how nice the 72T Targa's are. Especially in yellow!

This always seems to be the case when buying anything used.
What happens is you compare the best prices over the past 3-6 month period to what is aviailable right now. Not a fair comparison. If you patiently monitor the ads for the next 3-6, you'll find similar deals.

I think overall, we may be sitting at the bottom of a curve that is going to go up very sharply over the next few years with regard to 911 part prices.
Here's my thinking. We are, for the first time, really at the beginning of a point where even the latest of the torsion bar/Fuchs 911s (89 and earlier) are starting to become "old cars." While it's true they made a lot of those cars (SCs and Carreras), a lot have been taken off the road by crashes, etc. An even larger group is starting to just become "worn out" (250K miles, faded paints and interiors). To that add that these cars have a lot of emotional appeal to a lot of people. These are the "dream cars of our youth" for a lot of people. And, these are, mechanically fabulous cars that people will spend a lot of money resurrecting. Unlike 99% of cars made, it takes a catastrophic event to take a 911 off the road permanently. Most cars go to the scrap heap once they're just worn out. Not so with 911s. So high and ever-increasing demand for bringing these wearing out cars back to life, coupled with a diminshing supply of a lot of the parts, is gonna lead to big price increases for used NLA parts. Particularly the typical Porsche desirable stuff - sports seats, certain sizes of Fuchs, hood crests, rear reflectors, stock shift knobs, etc. As soon as something hits NLA, watch out! The black lettered rear SC and early Carrera reflectors are a good example. The stock early 915 shift knob is another. Once 8/9 Fuchs become NLA, they will go through the roof. |

BTW, Brian, I think you are dead on. If there were a good way to "assembly-line" the restoration of Carrera's and SCs and make it profitable, it would be a really fun little business.

It's not greed, it basic economics. Supply and Demand. Beleive it or not, fuch's are not exacly a wheel you can find at every tire center.
They are in fact rare, good quality and very light wheels. Even new today they would be expensive.

New today, they ARE expensive. I heard Wheel Enhancements price is now $850 each for new 9x16s. Yikes, glad I bought mine last spring.

Even new today they ARE expensive. Still available at your local dealer - parts department. Check it out. Fuchs still run batches for Porsche AG from time to time, as I have been told HERE!

I doubt 8 & 9x16s are ever going to get crazy expensive. they're just nowhere near as rare as 911R 7x15's, or RSR 9 & 11x15s. The 16" 8's & 9's are still manufactured in limited runs (16 years after they were last specced on a 911 or 930).

FWIW, or as a data point, I recently tried to sell a set of 9x15s in good condition, buyer accepted and then backed out of a price of $1700 for the pair.
