What to buy? Your expert advice plz
Hi guys.
I hope that you more experienced chaps may help me to decide? The choice is a) a 1990 964 C2 tiptronic OR b)a 1987 3.2 G50 M491 Both cars are lefthand drive and therefore cheap (ish) in the UK. Assume for now that both are mechanically sound. Both cars are up at the same price. What I need is a car that can remain road legal, whilst being destined for lots and lots of track time. Ultimately, and as funds rebuild, I would like to follow many of you down the backdated rs'rsr route. I would place either car on a strict weight loss program immediately. So, which is potentially the better buy for this purpose? TIA ![]()

1987 3.2 G50 M491
Much easier to backdate compared to the 964.

Are you per-chance browsing the virgin's site?
If so please buy the 964RS I'm seriously thinking about going into big debt to get that car.I need help. Fast. Anyway back on topic. Anyone driven a tiptronic on track? If its anything like the BMW M3 sytem I'd give it a wide berth. You can't beat a manual IMHO

Mark,
I will add my vote for the ’87 and G50. You will have many more options and probably at significantly lower cost. As far as putting the 911 on a diet, there are two approaches. First is to just remove stuff and carefully store it. Second is replacing original parts with light weight Factory versions or aftermarket replicas. What is the availability in the UK of fiberglass or carbon fiber parts? At least the low value of the Dollar compared to the Euro allows you to buy stuff in the States without penalty. Best, Grady

Thanks for the replys guys.
My heart says the 3.2 G50 is the right one of the two, just needed confirmation. Yes 911mot, I am refering to the 911 virgin cars. LOL no way I can afford the RS!!! SO you my friend will have to carry the interest on that particular loan repayment! ![]() Light weight parts here are available over here Grady, but I particularly like the parts available from fellow Pelican Series900, with the long hood and bolt on wing extensions. As you say, at nearly 2 Bucks to the Pound, shipping from the U.S. is worth considering. I am due to spend a week just outside Boston Mass in April, visiting a friend, I wonder if I could sneak a back date kit on as excess baggage? LOL ![]() ![]()

Mark have you spoken to them? Their ad doesn't mention if its factory turbo body or not. Yet near the top of the page they have a factory one and mention how rare they are.
Dont get me wrong, they are a very good dealer - I got mine from there and I'm well chuffed.

Mark,
I don’t think there is much “sneaking” involved. Just excess baggage works fine. Perhaps you are brining it to the UK for “technical evaluation” or equally valid reasons. A few “evaluated” scrap parts could be returned to the manufacturer for further analysis. Perhaps the Boston area Pelicans can have a Gathering of the Flock when you are in the States. Come skiing in Colorado for a great experience. The Rocky Mountains have the best skiing in the world. I can find you the right (inexpensive) places in Vail and Aspen. Best, Grady

Good point there 911mot. I am planning to visit them on Monday, worth checking that fact out first. There I go assuming again!!!! LOL ![]()

Mark,
No, medical in the States is very expensive, certainly not a fiver. What travel medical do you get, not that you would need it? With the Colorado fluffy powder you shouldn’t need a plaster cast. Even at my lame o’l age I can ski the groomed slopes. My son (19) pretends to enjoy skiing with me. He has out skied me since age 9. The only thing that matches Colorado skiing is a Porsche race car. Best, Grady

Or going upwind in an Alberg Yawl in 25K of wind with the rail under the water. Can't wait for summer.
P.S. I vote for the 3.2

Mark i would go for the 491 too ! But issen,t the 491 a Turbolook ? I,m not sure the series900 parts wil work with the wider turbo fenders. You could build an rsr offcourse but you will need new fenders in front. The 491 has the Turbo brakes aswell if i,m right so that,s a big plus.
Cheers

Good point Ed. If this is a go'er, I'll could always attempt to copy the look of Jack Olsen's BBII.
Now there's a thought. ![]()

LOL. I agree that copying takes no thought what so ever, but I would stress my use of the word 'attempt', which was clearly used to suggest that any such attempt on my part would be destinned to failure!
![]() I may have to take a look at your IROC suggestion, trouble is, I love those long hoods though! (sigh) If I went down the route of lighter panels at some point in the future, I would find it hard to replace the hood without going long.

Go RSR !! the car is perfect for it Mark. I like the Iroc look sure but a longhood RSR looks better i think. And since it will be a track car i,m pretty sure if you sell those steel turbo fenders and hood you will make enough to pay for the fiber RSR parts.
Cheers,

I agree with the others; the M491 has more potential than the 964.
