Thanks Santa! - 930s Wheel & Crest Install

Santa was very good to me this year. One of the things I found under the Christmas tree was a 930S steering wheel. I read the Tech articles and the past threads on the installation to ensure that I had a clue before I had pieces all over the garage. One thing that I couldn’t believe was how easy it was once I got started. Everything just fell into place and I didn’t have a single problem. A note- I didn’t use a spacer on my SC and it’s perfect. I’m sure most of the reasons why it went easy are b/c many of you have been through wrong ways and I knew everything to avoid. To those of you that went before me, thanks.

Anyway, I knew that the wheel would look great but I was not prepared for how different it would feel while driving. Maybe I’m imagining it but it made the car feel more responsive or maybe I was more responsive b/c I could feel the car better. I don’t know but it feels great and I was not prepared for the change. I love it!!

Some guys have been scared to install their Porsche crest and have gone without, judging by the previous threads. It really was a piece of cake once you get over the thought of drilling a hole through that beautiful horn pad. This is how I did mine for anyone who would like to but is still unsure.

Remove the plastic retaining piece on the back of the horn pad by removing the four screws.

Using a pencil, draw two lines from the screw holes on the back of the pad to form an “X”.

Drill a 3/32” hole through the back of the pad. Make sure that the hole is straight.

Now drill a 1/8” hole from the front, through the 3/32” hole you just drilled.

The pin base on the back of the crest is slightly raised. In order for the crest to sit flush, approximately 3/8” circle must be cut out of the leather surrounding the drilled hole. I used an Exato knife and it worked well.

Once enough material is cut away, the pin can be installed, lined up, and glue into place. I decided to use CyA glue for modeling. It is basically Superglue, which would also work well. Install the pin, and glue it from the hole in the back of the pad. It only needs enough to flow down into the hole and around the pin. Gluing it this way prevent any possibility of getting glue on the face of the horn pad and should be stronger than any other method.

Good luck! If anyone has any questions, feel free to post or Email me. I Love This Wheel!!

Good looking wheel, Ryan.

Makes a good Tech Article for fitting the crest neatly!

Thanks Adam. That was kind of the intent if Wayne wants to use it. He had mentioned in an earlier thread that he needed a Tech article for it but was too busy himself. I hope it helps out someone, I'm really happy w/ the results.

I installed two of those wheels recently. (No no its not the Simpsons car with steering wheels on both drivers side and passenger side, one was for a friend)

Both times I noticed that the new wheel was slightly off center when driving straight. Less than a spline but still noticable. Have you noticed the same thing?

I think its time for a little tie rod adjustment. I hope I don't have to take it to an alignment shop as long as I turn them both exactly the same amount. Any thoughts?

An excellent how-to, perfect for the less competent/enterprising among us (i.e. someone like me).

That looks *so* good - I hadn't really been planning on swapping out my stock wheel, dealing with a 13-year-old explosive device scares me, but I'm definitely reconsidering.

Ingo, I don't have the off center problem. While driving perfectly straight, if the wheel is not centered, assuming your old one was, just take it off and adjust a spline or two. I would not adjust the tie rods unless you were having an alignment problem before the steering wheel change.

Eion, maybe you could get a hold of Leland to take care of that airbag for you. On second thought, I saw a pic of the last car Leland pulled the airbag out of and it was not pretty. Good Luck!

Looks good Ryan. Yes it is a great feel that wheel has. I havent installed my crest yet and dont think I will. I may have found a place locally that will emboss the marque on the horn pad.
Ingo, I installed my 930s wheel awhile ago and dont have a off center problem either. Nice and straight.

VERY Nice Ryan! Looks like you are about ready for a track day,
or at least the Santa Barbara run

Ingo, if your wheel is off center, you *may* be able to loosen the top part steering shaft coupler accessed via the smugglers box and line it up that way. Just a thought.

HAPPY NEW YEAR all!

SB Run I is taking place on Feb 8th, 03 weather permitting. More details will come soon.
Brad, I was driving around Monday in the Pcar trying to get the new shocks settled and low and behold a radio popped out from under the passenger seat. I think its yours.
Email me where to send it.

Is that the radio from BBRII?

For X-mas I also got 22/28 torsion bars, Factory short shift kit, New rear bushings (I think I'm going to go w/ the Elephant Racing bushings though), and I just bought some 22/21 Carrera Sway bars. I haven't done X-mas w/ my parents yet and I think my wife hooked me up w/ them so there may be more on the way. I'll know Sunday.

I would like to get everything done by Feb 8 but I may wait till after the run so I know I can make it. Track day needs to happen soon, I'm starting to twitch in anticipation.

Hey, thanks Dan. Is it a Motorola? If you don't mind, I can grab it at the SB Run.

Hmmm, getting the new shocks settled, eh? I'll have to try that excuse next time wifey is in the car with me

Ryan,
I didn't use the spacer either. It was at a real awkward position with it.

Ingo,
had the same prob with the wheel off center.

About two weeks ago I installed the spacer to see if I liked better. (I wrote this thread in Dec 02)

I'm still not sure. I can see my speedo better but now I would have to move the remote display for my V1 to see it, kind of counter productive.

I like where the wheel sits but I don't think it's any better or worse for me. I can tilt my seat back further but I don't usually drive that way anyway.

Where can I get the crest, only? I have an original 930 wheel and believe the crest will look nice on it.

Some guys prefer the crest embossed in the leather on this style of wheel, but I think the gold/red crest looks better. I even bought the silver/black version of the crest, thinking it would be more appropriate with a black interior -- but I came back to the same one you're using.
