Emissions exemption in PA!

I just found and read the emissions testing code for PA and found an exemption that is typically not published. It says that if you have owned your car for a year and drive it less than 5,000 miles a year, regardless of age, you can get a special sticker that exempts the car from emissions testing!

I called my wrench to confirm and asked him specifically if that meant I could legally remove my cat. He reluctantly said yes since the car would not even be subject to a visual inspection.

One year for me will be this August and the cat is coming off!

Its pretty common knowledge. BTW, if your car is tuned well, it'll likely sail thru even without the cat, mine does when it actually has to be tested (exempt this year). And unless you go to a Porsche mech, the premuff looks like a cat.

I wouldn't just pull the cat-you'll likely not gain anything but noise unless its plugged. The premuff actually adds a couple minor hp.

It's fine that your the car becomes exempt however, you still want to make sure it's within spec's just for piece of mind....

Cheers

Yeah, I did that for the rally car. Before that we had to swap exhausts and run a special, lean emissions map to get through every year.

I found this out myself last summer (we've only lived in PA for 18 mos.) as I'd only driven it for 4500 mi last year. One thing I'm not clear on, if I drove it 4,500 last year and it was exempt from inspection and I drive it less than 5k this year is it still exempt from this summers inspection? To put it another way, does it get inspected every 5k mi. no matter how many years it takes or is it exempt every year it's driven less than 5k mi. in that year?

TIA,
Bill W.

From what I understand your wrench has to keep documentation on hand of the mileage at every inspection period. If it less than 5,000 miles from the last annual insection then you get an exemption.

Your wrench doesn't need docs-the mileage of the last inspection is written on the sticker. Any shop can apply the exemption.
