Scratchy noise from radio

I figured I would turn on my radio in my new SC the other day.

It is the factory original Monteray from Blau.

It turns on fine and all of the buttons work. However, when you turn the volumn button it makes this aweful sratchy sound like a CB would make.

I like to keep my Porshes original and I not interested in putting in a new radio. I don't even really listen to it at all, but I would like to fix the problem. Is there anyway to fix it?

Dirty contacts in the potentiometer that controls the volume. With the radio off, rapidly work it back and forth from low to high multiple times-usually that'll clean it up, if not, radio shack etc sell contact cleaner, but spraying it there will likely involve r/r the radio.

I get the same problem with my desktop speakers and my bedside radio. I think its due to dust build up on the rheostat.
Turning the volume button up and down quickly a few times seems to clear it for a while....

There used to be this magic spray you could get at Radio shack to spray in there and lube the dust. I don't know if they still make or sell it, but it would usually clear up the problem until it dried out or got dusty again.

Contact cleaner or when TV's had mechanical tuners instead of electronic tuners, tuner cleaner.

For those of us that remember the Marantz receiver glory days...search with google on DeoxIT from CAIG labs...works great on this type of application!

I did the wiggle think and it worked sort of but not really.

Sounds like I need the spray. Do I need to remove the radio for this?

Does the faceplate have to come off.

A photo of where to shoot the stuff would be great.

Beware of some sprays, as they can destroy the aesthetics of plastics.
