Early 911: debugging questions - electrical mostly
Guys,
I finally got my 73.5 today after a long shipping wait! It ran great home and I have already fixed a few things. For others, I do need some help.... The stuff I did: H4s right away (what a pain with new beefy seals), Repoint steering wheel and fix the horn, fix the radio (loose antenna and bad power), fix the bumper gap on the rear (loose bolts!!!yipee), and unstuck the seats - they now slide! Stuff I need advice on: - I have no oil temps at all, and I can't be sure what the issue is: Sender, wire or gauge or all... If I unclip the sender wire from the sender and plug a continuity tester on its end, the tester lights up when I touch any ground. Seems to indicate the wire is grounded and that is my problem, but I am no electrical wizard, please confirm or correct! [Edit: I am a moron, I did not unclip it from the other end to be able to say it's grounded, but I don't know where the other end is for sure] Based on that I pulled the gauge but it does not pull far without unconnecting a lot of stuff - practically none of which mimics the wiring diagram I have in terms of colors. Also I cannot see the same green/black wire behind the gauge, great, it's spliced somewhere... I've attached a long spare wire to the oil sender and brought it to the dash and was trying to "touch" the "correct" poles on the temps gauge to see if that produced any movement - it did not - yes the ignition was on, not fully but just enough to make the nearby oil pressure gauge move from its resting position... I thought that should do it, but nope... How to I determine my problem for sure, now ? Can I ground the gauge or something to see if the oil temps side at least operates ? How ? Oh, and there was 12V at the power and maybe 6 at the pole I assumed was the oil sender's behind the gauge. The wiring diagram on those is tiny !! Anyone got a big diagram of the back of the gauges per chance ? - Side mirrors: The captive ball indicated by an arrow on the picture rotates super loosely in the mirror housing. At speed the mirror just folds itself and hangs in the wind. Am I right in assuming that's worn out and I should order new mirrors ? I don't see any adjustment possibility. ![]() The rest seems Ok so far ! Thanks guys ! Greg. 73.5T |

OK, due to the overwhelming response on a week end (understandable), and following more experiments, let me rephrase:
If you unplug the oil temps sender and ground it, and the temps gauge still does not move, does this indicate the gauge is dead ? |
