What 964 exhaust system to get???

Hey everyone,

Well, I've got the itch again, and I'm looking at changing the exhaust system on my RSA. My problem is that I don't have a clue what to do. If SSI had a kit for 964s it wouldn't be a problem, but they don't. It seems like your only choice is either B&B or GHL, both of which suck. B&B is too heavy, sounds like crap, and breaks, and GHL is light, beautiful, but sounds like crap (on NA cars, turbos sound wonderful) and while no one I know has broken a GHL muffler, I've heard horror stories about breaking like 5 in a row.

My main concerns are gaining power and losing weight, but it still has to sound good. I recently started looking at some fabspeed exhaust options. They claim that their dual out exhaust with the cat-bypass will add an equal or greater amount of power than header systems... i'm not sure if I believe that, but for just under $1,400, the price of just the header portion of a header/muffler kit I'm interested. It's still single inlet though. They say it's 42lbs lighter than stock as well, but I've got a feeling that that's just losing the secondary muffler which I've already done. Also, those 4.5" tips are pretty disgusting looking imho, but other than that I don't really have too much of a problem with the kit.

The other fabspeed option is that they make a muffler for B&B headers... of GHL and B&B I kind of like B&B because while they're heavier they have bigger primaries. So that setup kind of appeals to me too, except that it is $2,500

Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out there and see what you guys think.

Thanks

i'm in the same boat as you looking for a 964 system. i was wondering if 993 heat exchangers would work. you would have two 3 into 1s...and i think it would sound better.

you would have to have a somewhat custom set up from the heat exchangers back and i'm not sure how to deal with the O2 sensor

Unless you replace your stock smog cams, w/ little or no overlap, headers won't do much good. Go w/ the Fabspeed cat back replacement.

If you use 993SS cams or better then B&B 1 3/4" headers w/ a Flowmaster muffler is a decent choice. You can even retain heat though it won't be as good as stock.

We usually use the "cup" rear muffler replacement pipe. This enables keeping the catalyst and resonator. Enhances the "911" sound and enables long trips to be made without the noise inside the car being too objectionable.
