How do you spell fun? easy! "BAE"

How did i end up here? Alright, so i started my love affair with cars at 16. I just saved up enough money to buy a E30 325i. First thing i did to it was make it low and stiff.

I managed to get a few of my friends hooked on bmw's in the process.

one of my friends bought a E28 M5.

After quite a few track days it became clear that even the older, rusted, broken down, smoking Porsche 911's were faster then me.

i just could not come to grips the understeer that bmw had...

The few really fast E30 guys basically slid the rear around the whole track. Very neat to watch, but nothing i could duplicate.

so i jumped ship after getting a few guys into the blue roundel “if you cant beat them, join them" so i sold the 325i to a friend bought a 1977 911 with a early SC motor. As Fun as this car is..... i quest for more! I cant have that pesky E28 step'n all over me on the front strech of Pacific raceways (formally Seattle int raceway).

so i bought part of a BAE kit! with 250hp, i will be content. After that, all my money can go right into seat time. I am probably going to be posting alot, with a TON of questions concerning the instillation. Thanks for all who have helped before, and will help in the near future.

I can't really make out the scratches, so hard to say if the compressor ingested stuff or maybe the PO tried to smooth or open up the passages.

Track down shaft play tolerance data and use a dial gauge to check the turbo. I'm not sure about Rajays but the housings usually are easy to pull so you can check for nicks and scratches on the inside and on the wheels.

hmmmmmm, intercooler....

Looks identical to mine except you have the early header.

If you do end up needing a turbo, a guy that goes by iamchappy has a couple of spares.
If you didn't get the installation manual let me know, I can send a copy.

7 psi boost is prolly the sweet spot for your engine, you can go higher but might need a 7th injector or intercooler to be safe at the higher levels.
I'm at 7 pounds boost and it requires my undivided attention when it hits. Boost is more addictive that crack so be careful, enough is never enough.

Looks like someone got in there with a dremel, to consistent for junk ingestion IMHO.

I just looked a little closer, appears you have a BOV instead of a wastegate like mine.
I wunder if you have room for a wastegate? Prolly not with the two into one header.

Wink

Don't use that 2-1 header unless the car already has SSIs. That POP valve is the original kit's boost control device. Lose it and use a wastegate and MBC. Use the pop valve flange to mount up your enrichment injector. Install a real BOV to keep the turbo speed up. And lose the 180 degree bend in the exhaust and run a right side exhaust 4.5" or so....
You can get 300HP......

Of course your resale value goes waaaaaaaay down!!!

The experts are stepping up to the plate.

Tsuter's advice is good stuff. It all depends on how quickly you want to get it up and running. You can do all the cool stuff now, or get it running as is and wait and do the upgrades later.

I've been running mine for a year and still don't have the 7th injector hooked up, one of these days.............

yes... and i have the later style HE's so i have a plan...

wait for a later style adapter to fall from the sky, and have it fit this earlyer kit(dont know if the rest of the stuff is the same)

or

i need a shop up here in prescott to make me an adapter off my current HE's.. why its being made.. i will add a wasegate coming off this adapter.. dont have one yet. But im looking.

already have a BOV from another project..
already have the PFD with the instilation guide

the turbo feels REALLY nice.. NO in and out type play and very little side to side(not enough slack that the oil film wont take up)
but i will take it apart and have a poke around.

"get it running as is and wait and do the upgrades later. "
how about "get it runing".. (on a very tight budget that is)..

-Nick Carbaugh (so i dont have to be refered by "air")

Gud plan.
If I was in the same situation i would either try and find a cat bypass pipe ( I just sold my spare a couple days ago) or else cut the flanges off an old cat. Then just weld a couple elbows onto it with the turbo flange on top, bingo all done.

what are you BAE guys doing for an air box? The plastic boxes are soooo weak
i thought one of those aftermarket aluminum units would be useful (weld up the backfire valve opening) for this type of install. They are no longer being made, so its a needle in a haystack to find one
best of luck- its one of the least (initially!) expensive ways to more power

Let me know if you need any spare parts, I have a turbo that was rebuilt by turbo city last summer, I had oil blow by problems with it but I was using it in a 914 and had to pump the oil out with an electric pump which couldn't keep up, shouldn't be a problem with a gravity drain. It has a new compressor wheel on it and I have spare gaskets and flanges, I have chain covers that are already tapped with fittings, a 3 in and 3 out flowmaster muffler with the flange, and another extra Rayjay turbo.
Sammy and tsuter have been very helpful along with others. All I have left on my car from the BAE kit are the bonnets, be careful my affliction started about this time last year, Next stop for me is an intercooler and 12 to 14 lbs boost woohoo.
Let me know if you need any of this stuff.
