No more Mobil 1-15/50?

I hear it's now the "extended performance" which has more little ball bearings and soap in it. Do I want to put that in my car?

Mobil 1 site

Now reads "Mobil".;)

surflvr911sc 01-30-2005 05:13 PM

I have been running M1 15-50 too. I tried their "find the right oil" thing and it recomended this- http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Truck_SUV_5W-40.aspx

Thoughts?

masraum 01-30-2005 05:23 PM

Damn, that explains a lot. I wish I had known, I would have done a serious stock up.

Wil Ferch 01-30-2005 05:28 PM

Mobile is a city in Alabama.....

Wil:rolleyes:

NOH20 01-30-2005 05:31 PM

How about the 0 W 40 instead? My car usually runs on 15 W 50 as well but a logical alternative would be the 0 W 40??? This is what the dealership used on my '97 C4S.

Mike Feinstein 01-30-2005 05:39 PM

Looks like 15w50 will still be available in the new formula http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Extended_Performance_15W-50.aspx. Hey Wil....I think Mobile is in Alabama.

Dantilla 01-30-2005 05:39 PM

I'm sure if there is enough crying from the track junkies, they'll bring it back.

Wil Ferch 01-30-2005 05:40 PM

Me bad....Alabama is what my mind wanted to write but my fingers didn't follow suit !! :)

Maybe we need to see the spec differences between the extended life formulation and the regular Mobil 1....before we get our knickers all twisted....

If all else fails...there's always Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5W-40 that I'm now using instead of Mobil 15W-50. Do the comparison. Doesn't seem to leak in my Carrera engine like Mobil 1 liked to do....

More $$$$$ per bottle perhaps?

Mike Feinstein 01-30-2005 05:50 PM

Picked up 3 jugs at Walmart today. Will be back tomorrow to clean them out.

sketchers356 01-30-2005 06:28 PM

Lol
I also did the pick my oil for me
Mobil aparently thinks that I need Truck/Suv oil
So are you telling me that the 911 is really a truck?
What is all the commotion with the Cayenne then?
Arent we all driving trucks already?

Noel 01-30-2005 06:32 PM

Who elses make a 20/15W50 Synthetic?

Again....what are the spec differences between "old" Mobil 1 and the extended life formulation?

Also....what about mobil 1 motorcycle blend? That had superior characteristics like the pre-"tri-synthetic" version of Mobil 1 anyways...which has been dumbed-down gradually over the years.

Redline..Amsoil....a few others make 15 or 20W-50 syn.

Nothing wrong with Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic, either. Look at all the specs in the "oil bible" ( see thread)...

If the link above doesn't work for you either, just look at the new extended performance formula. 15w-50 is available in that. I don't imagine using the new formula will be a problem, though I won't be too excited about paying even more, if they use the new formula as an excuse to jack up prices.

There was an excellence magazine with a tech article on all the oils Porsche approves. Valvoline Synpower 5w40, Kendall GT 20w50 and a few others were included. The issue came out about a year or so ago.

I used the valvoline stuff. 5w40 or mobil 1's 0w40 are pretty much the standard for european cars now.

What is wrong with the new formulation?

snowmann33 01-30-2005 08:18 PM

I read in a counterman awhile back (its an autoparts retailer magazine) that the newest api rating of oil will discontinue the use of some chemical that is known to add to pollution or something along those lines. The downside, this chemical also is a key chemical in engine longevity.

I believe SL is the newest in terms of last couple of months.

so all of mobiles stuff is SL rated.

Sad thing is, I first spelled it "Mobole" and then "fixed" it. But hey-thanks for pointing out my error.:)

Wil Ferch 01-31-2005 04:33 AM

Just playin'.....you know Mobile ( Mobil)....brakes ( breaks)....the stuff that convinces most foreigners here that we 'Muricans can't spell....:) :)

Then there's dolts like me that confuse Atlanta with Alabama when the mind wanders and gets tired !!!
