All,
My 1992 964 car spends nights in the warm garage and days on the road. Do I really need oil thermostat in California? I live in the Bay Area and the weather is not cold here during winter. Will I create any damage to the engine if I will take the “thermostat insert” out and let the oil circulating freely in my engine and the oil radiators all the time? Thanks, Alan |

Yes you need it. Without the thermostat the engine would never reach operating temperature on days below 60 degrees or so. Even on warm days it would take a very long time to reach operating temperature.

It depends on how long you want your motor to last.
The thermostat is there to get your engine up to operating temp quickly. Unless it's typically 190 degrees in your neighborhood, you're going to need it.

The oil thermostat is also there to protect your oil cooler(s) from cold thick oil being forced through them at 5 bar and having them pop like a zit.
