Oil Pipe to front cooler
I need to take the oil line that goes from the engine and oil tank to the front of the car. Actually ust need the pipes off that are seen with the rocker panals removed. Where is the easist place to remove from. The car is a 77 911 Carrera.

Well, you don't have much choice, since they're two one-piece bronze tubes. You need to disconnect each tube from the oil thermostat in the right rear fender well, disconnect each tube from the flexible hoses that lead to the oil cooler in the right front fender, remove all the double-C-shaped clamps that hold them against the underpan and that's it.
Having said that, getting them loose from the thermostat will be a *****, especially on a car that old. You will almost certainly strip the thermostat threads and have to use "thermostat-saver" nipples when you put the tubes back in place. And you will almost certainly need to buy the moderately expensive special Porsche oil-line wrenches, which are designed to work in the limited area you have--especially back by the thermostat--and are designed to take an extension pipe fitted over their handle, if necessary, for added leverage. This is a job that looks easy but is actually a stone *****. Stephan

Maybe I will reevalute and do later. My problem is someone jacked the car up and squished the oil line abit. Could someone fix with it still on the car? Like a plumber. It is just a pipe correct? Or is there a problem with metal breaking off and going into the engine? I am also in the middle of a bare metal paint job so I was hoping to paint down there too. Leaving those rocker panals off. Car runs fine, no heat issues. |

IMO, the easiest way to remove them is to take off the entire external oil system. You'll have better access, especially to the oil lines on the thermostat. However, as "formerly Steve" said, you'll probably need the Porsche-specific oil line wrenches to orient the lines after reinstallation.
As for repairing the crushed line(s), there's good info/alternatives in the archives. If you have to remove the oil lines from the thermostat, try heating the fitting and using two large wrenches in a counter-rotating motion (i.e. place one wrench handle on the ground and step on the other, or equivalent BFH). Two long lengths of pipe accomplish the same thing. If they don't budge, then you can resort to cutting them off with a dremel or equiv. Use antiseize during assembly so the task isn't as difficult ...... the next time. Sherwood |

One thing I forgot to mention is that you must be >sure< to counter-wrench against the wrench that you're using to loosen the line, if you know what I mean. If you simply try to twist off the big nut that clamps the bronze line to a fitting, you'll twist the line like a ty-rap. It's very soft metal.

That and use a bunch of PBBlaster (warms pipes if you can but cold will work). I had a major pain on the oil cooler breaking them loose, one good shot of PBBlaster, easy.
