Burning rubber smell

Every once on a while, I get a burning rubber smell in the cabin while driving with the heat on. It goes away after a fee minutes.

Nothing seems wrong that I can tell. The car runs fine.

Any and all possible causes or places to look would be welcome. Thanks.

84 Targa, Euro model, no A/C, stock everything.

Burning rubber???? My first thought is insulation from a smoldering wire, but if it is only when you have the heat on.......hmmmm.....maybe a hose in the engine compartment melting....don't know...just fishing.

Possibly could be related to a blower motor? Either wiring or the motor itself?

This has come up in a couple of other threads and it's happened on my 88 but I could never figure out what the cause was. In my case it seemed to be more noticable after longer highway trips where the car was at full operating temps for 2-4 hours.

Burning rubber smell

Thanks for the feedback. I did a quick search of the forum and it looks like something that comes with once in a while but without a clear and definitive answer.

That happened to me in my 3.2. In my case it was the rubber centred clutch slowly desintegrating and buring up in little bits. And then it completely shat itself. The smell also entered the cabin through the heating. Dunno why. Probably another "911 design quirk".

My car did this when the rear tires were rubbing. Perhaps the heater is drawing the smelly air into the passenger compartment. Check your tires... just a thought.
