I Hate Bodywork!

Sorry, I had to rant.
I've been working on my 89911 version rear bumper. The internal brackets have been welded and all holes filled, thanks to A Quiet Boom. A little filler and sanding and I thought things were looking good. Then I laid some primer down and saw all the imperfections. So, more sanding, filler, sanding, priming. Finally, she looked good. Tonight I laid some black lacquer down and guess what? More imperfections. I guess it's back to the drawing board.
I have tons of pictures from the build, but I was going to wait until the end to post the procedure. The advantage of this set-up is the safety factor of bumper shocks versus the fiberglass piece. In retrospect, I wouldn't do it again. By the time you buy a cheap bumper, aluminum plates for reverse mounting, tap and thread, weld, fill and paint you've spent a ton of time and money. Hopefully I can get the rest of the way through the project.

John

Hi John, don't despair, you mention that you are using lacquer. That may be the problem if the lacquer you are using has a slower flash-point. (slower drying time) It is more than likely biting into your previous coats of primer, exposing sand marks. Try wet sanding the bumper out with at least 600, then lay a coat of sealer on the piece. Let it cure, then shoot the color. If you are mixing your own color (lacquer coat ) use a slightly faster-drying lacquer thinner. Doug

That's why I dropped my car off and picked it up in a week. Priceless!! It is amazing how you can't see any imperfections untill you put a coat of gloss paint on a surface. I'm interested on seeing how it turns out.

I'm installing a glass bumper as we speak along with getting flares lined up. You have my empathy, TOTALLY!
