Track video w/mic setup question

I recorded some pretty cool track video this past weekend with a friend but the sound quality is terrible. What tricks have you guys used (mic placement) to keep the wind sound down to a minimum and improve the sound quality?

I used a cheap Radio Shack lapel mic and placed it under the carpet on the rear firewall. Made for good engine sound.
