Rear Bumper Height for Engine Drop

Please Help -

Dropping a '83 SC with 3.0 engine to fix oil leaks. What is the height needed at the rear bumper to remove the engine and transmission from under the vehicle (clearance)? Rear valance and bumperettes have been removed.

I curently have it jacked up 25 inches (from bottom of the bumper to the ground), and it just doesn't seem high enough for clearance.

Jack height is 6 inches high fully lowered (using an ATV jack).

Help is much appreciated!

I think you're looking at more than 30 inches.

Are you not able to jack the car high enogh with your existing jack? jack the car up to a reasonable height and then drop the engine using the ATV lift.... leaving the engine under the car. then... use a regular jack on the sides of the car at a lift point or the jack pad to get the car as high as you need it.

you can do the reverse thing when you put the engine back in so you dont have to raise the engine up as much to reinstall.

I think Bernie is right, it's over 30 inches. Where are you supporting the car? I used jackstands supporting under the rear torsion bar covers, with about 8" of wood blocks to add height for the jackstands. I think the jackstand height was about 26" at the T-bar covers, which was enough to slide the engine out.

I think you can see the general height required in this pic. It is scary, and make sure you chock the front tires. Notice the AFM has been removed to help.

Thanks guys. I'm supporting the car with jack stands at the torsion bars as recommended in Wayne's book. My jackstands go to 25-26 inches in height (Craftsman 6 ton jackstands), and I've currently got them at about 17 inches, so I have room to move. I was just a little concerned about the stability. Man, a lift would be nice ;)

24" at the bottom of the torsion tube covers will have it up high enough.
