Interesting. I've been considering a GT3 style center exit exhaust and have been wondering how to handle the license plate without the exhaust tips dragging on the ground or moving the plate to the side. This would be one way to do it. I don't think I like it enough to try it, but an interesting idea.

There are more than a few threads on here about putting GT3 mufflers in older air-cooled cars..... Both street and race cars... its works and fits pretty well. The stock GT3 brackets and Clamps can easily be used. Here it is on my 74 RSR.

Yeah I don't care about the muffler, the taillights IN the rear bumper is what I thought was so odd.

The Street 935 DP/Kremer rear bumper treatment was not a one-off, there were several of these modified 930's back in the day. I looked into doing that mod to my car and found it to be too invasive. The rear fenders have to be cut as the bumper extends all the way around.

We've done several of the 997GT3 backbox conversions, Early chassis, G-body and back dated 964. The GT3 tailpipes exit below the license plate on all and are not a problem. Fitment for the early bumper shows less of the muffler hanging down if the muffler is moved up and the license plate panel cut-out to accommodate.

It’s one way to bring the rear bumper up to the height of the front bumper on a G body. G body cars have the front turn signals IN the bumper. The long hood cars have front and rear bumpers at similar height compared to the door sill and that’s one of the reasons that I think they look so good. The G body cars have a higher front bumper compared to rear and the heights of the panel gaps between bumper and body are mismatched up until the 996. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

@Geneman and @RarlyL8 thanks for the feedback on the exhaust (Rarly, I've looked at your site several times and expect to go back with a credit card someday!). I have an '84 with a Strosek style kit so the plate recess is about an inch lower than it would be on a stock '84. Short of cutting up the rear fenders and moving the whole bumper up and taillights into the bumper, like the pic @ADDvanced posted, I don't think I can do the GT3 exhaust without moving the plate to the side. That might be my best option but one of the reasons I like the GT3 exhaust is the symmetry so a shifted plate might drive me nuts. Most of what I've done to the car so far can be easily returned to stock so I wouldn't be willing to cut up the fenders to make this happen. /hijack
The lights mounted in the bumper definitely give it a 928 vibe. I think moving the bumper up like this might work better if they'd used some simple round lights, RSR style. Possibly LED rings or something like what is on Rench's blasphemy build. I like that they tried something new. |
