It's been sitting since 1984 but the engine & tranny were rebuilt in 1994? So, when was the last time the car was driven on a regular basis?

Looks like a nice 'unmolested' car. Those are getting very hard to find. Does it run? The rust issues may make the 'original paint' a non-factor in the value since at least part of the car would require painting.

Biggest factors would be the condition of the motor and -- of course -- how much more rust there is.

The rust is the potential deal-killer, IMO.

you gotta get it up on a rack where you can poke around for rust. rebuilt but not running and needing paint, could be a good deal for you. they always bring more if they run and drive of course. somewhat of a pig in a poke, but $5K would be a good place to start if it passes the rust inspection. personally, i don't care about the mechanicals as much as the body and interior. could be worth $10K if it runs and drives well.

"i don't care about the mechanicals as much as the body and interior."

- Well sure, but how would you feel if you ran a body shop instead of a mechanical shop?

My question: why so much rust if it is from SoCal? Maybe you can run down the title transfers... but yes imeprative to get it up on a lift and poke it everywhere. Take out the head & taillights, pull back the carpets, etc. ...

I don't own a shop and I feel the same way. Rust is a scary thing and any car that I've found a little on ALWAYS had a bunch more hiding somewhere else.
I guess I'm just skittish around rust because I like datsuns so much and the metal on them seems to evaporate when exposed to salt.

WOW! This, IMHO, is one of the boldest statements I can remember any 'regular' Pelican saying!

And I agree 1000%! I'm with you John!

I've always been afraid to say it too much because I know how touchy it could be. Let's be honest, most of us want to mod the mechanicals anyway so if there's a heavilly tricked car that has body issues, I would keep looking. And to back that up, I did. I know there were at least 3 early cars I passed on that were beefed up but the body was in question. However, there was one '69 that I probably should have investigated a little more but let's not cry over spilled milk.

My car's body is great but the MFI is "out to lunch". I can tweak that on my own. Well, to a degree, then I'll have to bring in the big guns. But I know I'll get it running well.

I did get a little surprise while changing carpet though. It would appear that when the first owner added an aftermarket alarm, someone ran a wire to the engine compartment but failed to seal it properly. That allowed water to get in and soak the driver's rear seat back and then rusted it a fair amount. That's my current holdup. After that, I should be back on track.

My uneducated opinion of this '69 would be 6k, and as much as 11k if the engine checks out.

Bear in mind that could change radically one way or another after an actual eyes-on inspection.

Good luck and please keep us informed!

Yes, the prevailing suggestion is to get it professionally inspected. However, the pics look good, but again, the internet makes things look better.

There appears to be some typical rust around the battery boxes. If this area has been unretouched, it looks quite manageable. Remove the headlights and take a look inside. The HL buckets are a great reservoir for water. The "drain" plugs provided by the factory clog up easily which in turn produces the "aquarium" affect. Peel the carpets back and take a look at the floor boards too.

What makes people think cars don't rust in So. Cal? There is humidity and moisture here. AZ is the place where cars last forever; not here.

yeah...

that car is worth more in parts than it is as a driver. Sorry guys, Shawn.

Edit: and I estimate that driver to be worth $11K

I'm 100% with you there also, after having owned a 1969 911T.

Body work is very expensive compared with mechanical work.
