Why so nasty?
As many of you may know, I have my engine out for a clutch replacement, and a million other smaller items. I was cleaning out the area where the engine and the transmission come together, and I was curious if it were normal for it to be so darn filthy in that area? Seems like it should be sealed enough that it wouldn't be like that.
Should I be worried about the filth? Maybe the seal was just bad? Thanks

It is normal, but you can clean it.

It just gets nasty, especially if when some oil gets past either the crank or input shaft seal. If it's at all wet with oil you'll definitely want to put new seals in. I'd definitely clean it.
Thank goodness this wasn't another thread about people being rude.

Matt, you're a lucky guy. When I was 16, your car was brand new and completely unobtainable except in my imagination. I had a POS '67 lemans.

extras...
there are little caps on the case, about the size of a dime. you should put a layer of epoxy over them. also do your rear main seal, and main shaft seal on the tranny. "If you dont have the tool for the tranny shaft seal, let it be. Its not a good thing without the tool..."

For a 915 tranny what tool is required to replace the input shaft seal?
Bearing in mind that the clutch guide tube is replaced during clutch work anyway. Always replace the clutch release fork as they crack.....eventually

Thanks for the comments guys. My dad and I are doing a brake job on the car now, so I thought that I would get the transmission and lower valve covers degreased. jwmc1, sorry, I did not intend on high jacking your thread!
