Power antennae

I have a '79 911sc. Every time I turn on the radio the antennae rises up from the fender. That is what was expected back in 1979. Here in 2007, I like using my iPod through the tape player. But to use the tape player this antennae must rise up. My question is: Is there a switch available which inhibits the power antennae activation, so that the radio/tape player will function, leaving the antennae down? Do I purchase a new radio with this option built-in? Does this option exist? Thanks...

There is a wire coming out the back of the radio that signals the antenna to go up when the radio turns on. On my car I just put a simple toggle switch inline with that wire and mounted it under the dash underneath the ashtray. Now I just flip that switch open and the the antenna stays down even with the radio on. You just need a simple single pole single throw switch.

Rick964, Thanks for the response. I know my question seemed simplistic, but I wondered if there was a radio system out there which took these old radios into account vis a vis the new electronics. Your solution seems just as good. I think the 'beneath the ashtray' fixed toggle is a clean enough solution. Thanks again. -Oliver

Ok not to hijack the thread ( but Oliver already has his answer). Can anyone recommend a good internal antenna to replace the heavy PIA electric one??

My aftermarket stereo only puts up the antenna if I have selected the radio. As soon as I shove a CD in it the antenna goes down again.
A PO had installed an inline toggle switch under the dash for the antenna... must have been for the old stereo.

I have a Kenwood aftermarket stereo in the car, I wish it did that too.
