85 Targa Backdate to 72RS 3.6 proceeding very nice!
Do not have all of the email addresses for the people who have asked how the backdate is going on my 85 Targa so will post the latest pictures here. Now it really does look like a 72 RS! Stick some H-1's in along with the early style turn signals and its ready to rock!
Car is at Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix. The guys there grafted a early style nose section into the car so that now the early "long hood" actually works the way it was designed with the latch, and not just with the rubber straps used on many of the cars. Section was welded in, textured and painted and now it looks totally stock. Very nice work and their body people are excellent. New oil cooler goes in the front spoiler and will keep the front fender in series. We were going to notch the front bodypan to provide more exit airflow with the front oil cooler but decided to stay stock for now and see how the temps work out with the 3.6. Jim said that he felt that it would work fine as is unless I got stuck in traffic in the summer with the A/C on. This is not a daily driver so that is not going to be an issue. Car should be ready for the road by later today or Monday. Cannot wait! JoeA ![]() ![]()

Rick,
Yes, will stay with silver. Just like the color. May drive it with the front in primer for a bit as am short of bux right now and need to do some other things first, as noted below. Its been over a year since I really drove it (the 3.6 conversion took far too long, my fault) and I need to get some time in behind the wheel! Souk, Next thing needed will be an upgrade to the brakes to hold back the extra power of the 3.6 upgrade. With the weight loss (bumpers and anything heavy I can pry off) it should be rather fast now and brakes and torsion bars are next on the list. Joe

Nice!
Can you documnet some of the welding & etc. for those in snow/salt country who want to do this? ALso, can you weigh it on some truck or other scales? People are curious about how much more these conversions weigh than the actual early cars. Also, what changes to the rear? re black trim - take a look at the car Jeff Gamroth did (yellow) in Excl. a year or so ago for ideas on what black will look like. Or maybe satin trim... |

Yah! I think brakes would be a good idea
![]() Really, that thing will be a blast! If my light weight with a 3.0 is fun, your car will be better than a night with a stripper...rewarding ![]() |

That looks fantastic. Are the fenders glass or steel?

Great looking conversion so far, love it! Maybe PM could become the "autofarm" of the US.

Finally back on the ground! Hate it when the boss makes us work!
The fenders are stock steel Porsche units. Thought about fiberglass units but wanted the every day durability of steel. The weight difference is not that much and this is a driver, not a race or show car. I found them used on Pelican but they had a bit of "cancer" (rust) that needed to be cut out and then we welded in good metal. As usual they needed to be fitted to the car as each body is a bit different. Do not have it on the car but it will have a ducktail, as it SHOULD! Would love to put the car on a scale and see what it weighs. I could not believe how heavy the bumpers were! All the hardware associated with the impact bumpers really added up and I am taking the electric seats out, so this will make a difference. I hope that PMS has taken pictures of the conversion as I have been out of town working. I got the above from Jim Patrick so assume that he has been documenting the changes. John, if anything has "mach tuck" this puppy will! Cannot wait to find out how it runs. Was in Santa Barbara recently and MikeZ let me drive his 3.6 conversion and it was a hoot. Hope mine is as much fun! CBR, the quality of the work at PMS has been excellent. Anything they do they do right and its all with the best materials. I could not ask for a better shop in this area. I could have done most of this work but just did not have the time. The car sat on and off for most of a year after I started the conversion. Got in the middle of it and things did not "flow" right and I was not in the right mindset to get back into it. When I "re-adjusted my attitude" got back into the car and finished the engine install and when it did not start after my spending a fair amount of time, took it to PMS where they found the flywheel sensor damaged. That was what kept it from starting. From there we discussed their completing what I had started and just felt comfortable with them. You could eat off of any of their floors or work surfaces, just the way it should be in a race shop. Jim has some of the nicest cars around, and is building a beautiful 914-6 right now. They also have several 914-6(3.6) conversions there that I was drooling over. Need to find a way to make more (lots more) money and take one of the 914's off of his hands... Will post more pictures on Monday when I get back home for a week! Also we need to get a email list of the Pelican people in both Phoenix as well as Phoenix so we can get a drive up into the mountains. Please PM me if you are interested with a email address and will start setting it up. Thx, Joe

Eric,
Guess you do not need the A/C serviced now!?? We need to get together and will be back in town next week. Lets do lunch or something and we can stop by PMS and see the car if you have time. Can also take you by my warehouse where all the cars are stored. In case you need a place to do some minor work might work out a deal. Joe
