have I lost my mind,,,,man?
Please tell me if I have. I lay awake last night and could not sleep, visions of my new exhaust dancing through my head like sugar plums. I tried to wash these new product images from my mind by thinking of the new mail box I need to get set at our family lake house that may be my ticket to a smog free existence. Still thought it all revolved around my new parts lying just in the room next to me. Ordering the parts 5+ months prior to my next smog and intended install was possibly not the smartest thing I’ve ever done. It has lead to much torment since the UPS delivery last Friday.
My question and poll is this, should I do the exhaust swap now and possibly have to switch out back to stock for smog testing in August? I figure I will get my renewal notice a couple weeks into June, a quick smog test (if this new county address thing doesn’t pan) and then the install the new parts. Otherwise it’s install now, bite the bullet, hope the smog exemption comes through or possibly do a swap back out in mid July. That’s five months of SSI HP increase for AX season and my 1st track day. Thing is it is a holiday weekend with rain forecasted, so that’s three days otherwise spent hung over, is that anyway to spend my life? Actually that’s another thread in OT for another time. I digress; I would like to hear the experiences of the reinstall of stock system, specifically the air pump plumbing on a 78/79 SC. I have studied threads on the SSI install so I feel prepared for that job and kinda know the pitfalls and what I am in for. in fact lost my mine. I feel like I might be, as the parts are beginning to talk too me……… any bay area guys that want to join me for an exhaust drop and reinstall this weekend stay with the poll and thread for as Regis would say "is that your final answer?". ![]()

I'd go for it. Some of the smog guys don't know a Cat from their butt! You could convince them you have twin cats, especially if you have the O2 sensor bung on the SSI's. You "can" pass the actual smog if you lean out the motor, so bring your 3mm wrench with you to the test

"Possibly" have to switch back out in a few months?
Unless something is different in Nor. Cal., or you have some connections, you will almost definately have to switch to get it smogged. I don't think you are going to pass the visual. Possible, of course, but I think unlikely at the vast majority of smog shops. At least down here in So. Cal. I've used many different ones over the years, and actually found them to be fairly sophisticated at identifying equipment. (Maybe because there are so many Porsches down here). I'd just wait. Your car has had that exhaust on it for almost 30 years. 5 more months isn't going to hurt anything. Then you can get is smogged, and you are good for 2 years. Plus, you can use that 5 months to save up a bit more money and buy a *real* muffler that won't sully those beautiful SSIs. Putting a crappy Bursch on SSIs is like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. |

I don't like the choices. There is no fundamental difference between #1 and #5. #2, #4 and #6 are the same as well.

well dave, sorry to have put a damper on an otherwise splended day. i tell you what, you just choose whatever option you feel works "for you" and don't beat yourself up over it so bad. in my next poll I will run a draft of choices by you prior to posting to see that you are not bothered with the redundancy i may impose on you. others have seemed to pick through the BS, and have actually got it.
this guys killing me for attempting to add a little humor to this post. funny thing is the attempt at humor was pointed at guys like dave and loren, you know guys unhappy with their existence and place in life.... note to self, add dave to buddy list.

i am attempting to register the car in a no cal county that currently does not require smog testing. i am looking into it, as my parents own property with a mailing address there.

get some sleep toby! if it helps, i will give you $500 just to take all the parts and the agony away. what are friends for? i will buy you dinner too.
if i were you, since this is not your daily driver, i would drop the parts in. the hardest time will be the first time, and who cares if it takes 2-3 weekends to get it all back in time for the smog beotches? i cannot believe i cannot buy a 50 states legal exhaust for my 911. so, paypal ok?

Have you ever considered moving to a place where they don't smog test?

I've had Bursch mufflers on a few cars.
I just don't like anything about them. I hate the way they look, I don't like the exhaust tip or the tubes that hang down under the valance like on a hopped up '63 Bug. I don't like the way they are crafted, they seem like a very bottom drawer product with bad welds, no craftsmanship, just about the worst, cheapest materials possible. I don't particularly like the way they sound. I don't like the way they rust out, both from the inside AND outside, in short order. In short, I just don't think it is a quality product, not one that I would want on my car, at least. Seeing one on a street 911 (IMHO) signifies to me an owner making shortcuts. Maybe they've improved some, but every one I had was crap in all regards. I'd personally use a factory stainless 2 in, one out muffler. Or, if an aftermarket piece, a more quality, stainless one. But that's just me. |

pwd, you i continue to look for work in southern oregon. medford, ashland, grants pass, up to about roseburg. so yes i am looking to get out. unless you have an out shed for me???
noah, thats was thinking in choice 3, see below..... cliff, i actually have a test pipe for the cat/smog exhaust guy that helps the most this weekend....... we may have to remove the plug and clean up the threads in the 02 sensor bung. whoever shows with the coldest beer and leaves with the dirtiest hands takes it...

I think you ought to go ahead with the install.
Can you just leave that air pump thingy up top and just not connected so that when and if you have to put the old system back on it won't be that bad to reattach all that pumbing? I know that would be defeating part of what you want to do. Just an idea... Then work real hard at getting the address moved up north.

I have a Bursch and love it. Rust isn't an issue, and I live in New England (my car is only driven weekends). The sound is great w/ my early style heat exchangers, which are much the same as SSI's. I'm not saying they are rustproof, but it hasn't been a problem with mine.

Wait a minute K9, I thought you were gearing up for the DE portion of Infineon this weekend? Did you not attend the ground school? What up?

i attended but my plan all along was the 1st thunderhill event. i don't like walls, of which there are many at sears, and more than anything the chance of the wet stuff scared me a bit. dean thomas in the post i reference above says it will not rain this weekend......
i am waiting on the april thunderhill event sign ups, you be there for that event? it also give me a chance to get an AX under my belt this year prior to my 1st track experience. i just got an extra set of wheels and some victoracer so i am dying to try them at an AX. you going this weekend?? have fun if so and i will look on the ggr site for some pics of that beautiful red car of yours and all the shots of clear blue sky...
