More help - half shaft removal
Alright.
I've got all (8) the flange bolts off of both ends of the passenger side half shaft, which appears to be a Lobro. I can't get either end (tranny or wheel) off. Where am I "supposed" to be hitting it with the soft hammer (or hammer and wood), right against the CV joint??? How do you get this MUTHA off ??? !!! I gave it a good BI#@H slappin' and all it did was hack up and drop a glop-O-grease/grime on my forehead!

Use a ball peen and hit it directly outside the dowel pins . Dont resort to prying , there is a gasket surface there. Dont be afraid to use force . Just be accurate .

There are gaskets on both end of the driveshaft, that almost glue the CV's in place. Try prying carefully between the CV and the hub resp. the diff flange. Don't pry at the wrong end of the CV flanges (close to the bolts) but on the outer end of the CV flanges (approx. 1.5 inch from the bolts). The CV's are also positioned by two steel pins on each end that have to come out approx. 1/2 inch before you can remove the shafts.

Thanks Guys !!
Half shafts are out! I used the pry method, but had to use a tiny screwdriver and hammer to carefully chisel through the gasket. Then popped a larger screwdriver in to do the real pry part. You can't just whack this model from the side because of the roll pins. The only (obvious) problem was that I hadn't done it before. With all the GUNK on there I wasn't sure where the gasket was and didn't want to mar-up the wrong part. I'll write up a little tech article tomorrow with some photos and send it to Wayne. Maybe he'll add it to the tech article already listed. I couldn't find any good pictures with arrows anywhere...

I use a wedge made from a plastic tent peg in lieu of a screwdriver. Tent pegs cost 50 cents each, their plastic is tough and will not mar the CV joint surfaces.

The gaskets only seal grease, so it is not too critical. You really have to mess the surface up to do any significant damage. With a little bit of care it's no problem. Worked fine for me for many years. In Wayne's 101 book he also recommends to "gently pry".
