End of Round 1 upgrades, car is one the road again

Most of this stuff is elementary to you guys, but I’m posting it anyway. I'd never done anything more mechanically intensive than changing the oil on a car before I came here last year. I was pretty proud yesterday when I rolled her out of the driveway and the wheels didnt fall of the car . Everything still works!

Here's a summary:

22/28 t-bars
Odyssey dry cell battery conversion relocated to smugglers box
Koni sport yellows on all for corners
Elephant Racing poly-bronze bearings in the front and Neatrix spring plate bushings
Adjustable spring plates from an SC stripped and yellow zinc plated
New ball joints
Turbo tie rods
Bump steer spacers
New front wheel bearings
Rebuilt Carrera calipers in the front with minitex pads new master cylinder
Bielstein seats, Prototipo

The scary thing is that the car doesn’t even feel like it needs an alignment. I know better so it’s going in this week to have everything checked out.

Many thanks to Grady Clay, Milt, rdane, KurtV, Bill V and everyone else who has helped me out here in the forums with MFI, brake, suspension, and engine questions.

Thank you Wayne for the 101 book, the tech articles and the forums. I never would have tried any of this stuff myself without Pelican's resources. The parts probably wouldn’t have been as easy to find either .

'Thanks' Chuck at Elephant Racing for lining out the suspension setup and for the help with the battery. I was expecting to need a mouthpiece for my test drive yesterday from some of the stuff Ive read, but the car feels great.

More 'Thanks' to Jason at Paragon. Id still be looking for the right Koni inserts if I didn’t call Paragon.

'Thanks' to TRE for the hookup on the master cylinder. The brakes are much better now.

On to Round Two of the upgrades....

I just wrapped up a similar project and used the rennlite.com ride height calculator.... hit the goal 'euro height' on the first drop of the car.

Its still going in for a cornerbalance/alignment tomorrow.

Congrats on the work

i had worked on cars alot prior to getting my 911, clutch in a rabbit, brakes, and other what i would call 9/10 things. 9/10 meaning 9 out of 10 people would not attempt it. when i got the 911 i was TERRIFIED of working on it. oil changes and brake pads and the like, simple stuff was doable. this board, more than any book has given me the confidence to do major work on it now. at least what i consider major.

some of the things ive done like my recent suspension rebuild and my pending exhaust swap out has made me appreciate the car more, feel closer to it, and the pride i feel after doing a 9/10 project is undescribable. i relish that feel and the money saved hardly matters, the feeling of accomplishment can not be purchased at any price.

congrats shu, and wait until your next p-car event when you can share your experiences with someone who says 'I would love to, and am thinking of doing that, but i don't know if i can pull it off" you will say "its cake and would love to give you a hand doing yours". again congrates,,,, and most important, whats next? after the alignment.

toby

The feeling that you get by doing work yourself cannot be measured. I remember just sitting in the garage staring at the car in amazement that it still ran after I got done with it (well, it's never done). This summer I set a goal for myself to build an engine from scratch, or rebuild a core, etc. We shall see, but it is scary to start.

Good job, now drive the heck out of it.

You should try aligning it yourself. Its way easier than some of the stuff you did. Might save money too, line it up than take it in and have it checked, if they dont have to change anything they will charge you a minimal fee. My guess (my experience) they wont want to change it. It will be so close they will be afraid to screw it up. There is a great procedure here on the board somewhere that describes the procedure. Its pretty idiot proof.

Congrats Shuie, now the fun starts!

Can you explain what Koni yellows (externally adjustable?) shocks you used and how you got them to work with your early struts?

Thanks!

Heck... it was exciting to read even though I'm a year late ... to answer Spud's question....

Koni yellow inserts can be used in cars originally equipped with Koni fronts. I believe that you need to get the Koni inserts suited for a Boge strut as well as a different gland nut (fine thread if memory serves).
