I'm in the wrong business...
I started the interior work on Bluebird this week. Pulled the Recaro Sport seats and took them to an upholstery shop a friend recommended.I knew I was in trouble when I saw the Ferrari parked in the shop.....
We look at samples and I decide on Dove grey leather with cobalt blue inserts and piping. He jots down the notes and says....... $3400.00......... I love these seats but the Sparcos are looking alot better right now.........

A pair of sport seats in black vinyl will run you at least $3,000 if you can find them. You're creating something custom, in leather. Seems like a reasonable quote to me.

Oh wait.
I thought you were talking early sport seats. Disregard what I wrote.

In every market, there seems to be a variety of upholstery shop for Mr. Dover, and at least one shop that does really good work for a fraction of the price Mr. Dover pays. It's just a matter of finding out where that shop is. I usually go to mechanic places and chat about cars, and I include upholstery in the conversation. It won't take long to hear who is good, and reasonable.

The middle of the road body shops always have a good upholstery shop in the wings as well. All the decent shops here have one or two on the same street....

then there's the $5K-$8K body and paint work. takes all the fun out of a restoration. my projects usually grind to a halt for a long time when they reach the body/paint stage.

I bought Wet Okole seat covers instead. Not bad looking and a lot cheaper!

Do you know what brand of leather the shop was planning to use ? Unfortunately the shops pay a premium for Connolly leather which is obviously passed on to the consumer . I still think price seems high even if they were using Connolly leather . Get some prices using domestic leather you'll probably get a more reasonable price .

Yes I think you should look into this further. I checked leather pricing/quality and there is a big diff (like most anything else) in the low end to $$$.
Overall it sounds high to me. A good shop doesn't always = $$$$$$
