Head studs..

How do you know if you have a head stud problem? I hear alot about this. I had a friend with an 88 coupe that had a broken head stud. I remember that the exhaust had a weird sound to it. It also had an aftermarket exhaust on it. But the sound was more like a midrange RPM noise. I thought that it sounded like a bad exhaust. The mechanic told him he had a broken head stud and that 1 was ok...two or more and $$$. What does it cost to fix?

Broke 6 head studs on my 1981 SC (158K miles) that lead to complete rebuild. If there are more than a few broken you will hear a popping sound comming from the exhaust port. Blowby that will damage your cylinders quickly. I ended up replacing two cylinders on mine. Remove the lower valve covers to check the studs. Several half-bolts and nuts were bouncing around when I found mine. It is usually the lower studs that break (dialivar Sp?). SC had non-steel, dialivar studs on the bottom row. Don't know what it would cost to repair in place, all mine were replaced with steel studs during rebuild.

Remove the lower valve covers and look for loose barrel nuts.

I thought by 1988 all studs were steel and fairly reliable, you may want to pull the upper valve covers also. I think a full top end rebuild would cost 3-5K depending on what you find.

Do a search. You will find a lot on this topic.
Walt, I believe that the later Carrera engines have an epoxy coated Dilivar head stud which is less suseptible to stress corrosion cracking.
