Another RSR Clone Project - Update 8
I've had the car home now for a couple of weeks. Latest progress includes brush painting the underside with the same signal orange paint as on the body. I've also completed the installation of the suspension and brakes. Here's the latest pictures:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108926605.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108926653.jpg I am using the Elephant Racing polybronze bushings and monoballs all around with 23/31 hollow t-bars, JRZ raised spindle adjustable struts, aluminum cross member and rear control arms and Bilstein sport rear shocks. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108926884.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108926921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108926971.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1108927004.jpg The installation of the polybronze and monoballs was a breeze. Chuck seems to have engineered a very good product. All of the reports I've read indicate that they will ride and handle as good as they look and installed. The only difficulty I had was the installation of the larger rear t-bars. The holes in the flared fenders did not line up perfectly with the t-bar openings in the body making for a very tight fit. Next I'll be tackling the rewiring and reinstallation of all of the electrcal components. The engine is out for machine work and should be ready for the reassembly in about 1 month. The gearbox with LSD and short gears is complete. I am still targetting to have the car ready for the Parade in Hershey and have registered to show it in the concours. Keep your comments and suggestions coming. They are part of the inspiration to complete the project on time. |
That looks so awesome! Keep us posted.
|
Wow. Its like my cars big, badass brother. See you in Hershey.

Amazing project! Nice work!
|
Looks awsome! What is going in the back?
|
wow! there are three things with this thread making me green with envy. in order of envy, from most to least:
1. sweet car project. 2. car lift 3. three car garage. despite this, please keep up with the updates. :D |
Better than Sex???
|
That is outstanding
|
Simply AWESOME......
Are the rotor holes (cross drilled) on the other side pointing in the same direction? It looks like you have the right and left sides switched. On the left side of the car, (as shown) the holes should spiral backwards (or to the right) from the center. |
Amazing. Porsche painted some areas of the bottom matt black, so when you looked at the car from the side it would make the body under the rockers less prominent. You should do that. Perhaps someone with a concours original car can post the areas that should be black.
|
Man that thing looks so clean it is almost a shame to dirty it by driving it on the road.
I did say almost though:D Looks awesome. I haven't really liked many cars in bright orange but that one is a beauty. Keep us posted. |
Stunning.......
- as to the problem fitting the rear bars through the holes of the ( presumably added) rear flairs..... .....look at the Gunnar Racing site, where they say they insert a rod or broomstick in the TB inner mount, so that the stick pokes through the newly-added rear flairs as the flairs are fitted. They allude that if you don't do this....everything seemingly lines up but then ( Ta da !)...the TB's can't go through the body hole because it's off-center...arrgh! Wil |
Wow... This is better than new !
this is the way of a perfect restauration ! bravo ! Ray |
What a beauty!!
Thank you for keeping us updated. Looking forward to more. |
Less than 100 posts and you come up with that crap? Go away. Never come back. You are a troll of the worst kind. (Interpretation: That car looks amazing! Shame on you for making me jealous.) SmileWavy
|
That's so beautiful that I'm misty. :)
The paint is awesome. Is it two stage or one stage. It looks like it might be two stage. |
I don't think I'd be able to bring myself to drive it.
I'd just want to sit in the garage and stare. |
Thanks for all your comments. They keep me motivated.
Relative to your questions: The paint is Glasurit 2 stage urethane. I stripped the car except for the underside where I left the original undercoating. The body, trunk & engine compartments and fender wells were painted at Auto Associates. I used the same paint, unthinned, with the hardener mixed in to brush paint the underside. I constructed a psuedo paint booth in the garage using a window fan and some tarp to isolate the working bay. I've been studying the Gunnar restorations of RSR's and they paint the underside body color. I like the look of the orange underneath. The brake rotors are Zimmermans and are the same left and right. I don't know of any reason why they should not be. I can't think of any aerodynamic effect that would relate to the hole pattern and direction of rotation. Am I missing something? The engine will be a pump gas 3.0 lt based on a 1978 case. I'll be using ported twin plug heads with the original dizzy modified for twin plug by Gerry Woods, Mahle RSR 10.5:1 P&C's, GE-60 cams from John Daugherty, 46MM PMO's and RSR headers. I'm thinking about 300 HP with about 2000 lbs curb weight. |
"...300 HP with about 2000 lbs curb weight."
AND its an orange longhood. Covet thy neighbors Porsche. |
Oh My God, that is my freakin dream car, my absolute dream. In Orange too. I would LOVE to be putting that thing together one loving piece at a time.
Congratulations, it is great to know that there are guys that actually get to do the things many of us dream about. Total, total congrat's, enjoy the HELL out of it for all of us! Please show us pictures to completion and some final wallpaper-quality pix on some beautiful leafy winding road in the spring. |
>>The brake rotors are Zimmermans and are the same left and right<<
Mine are Zimmermans also, and there are indeed a right and left part number. Thats why I asked if they are spiraling in the right direction on the other side. If the right side is going forward also, then you have them switched. If the right side is spiraling backwards, then you have two sets of "right" sides. The cooling vanes on the inside of the rotor are directional and correspond to the holes. |
One awesome car.
I can only hope my long hodd looks half as good when it is finished. More pics Michael |
Zimmermans different left and right??
Hummm.....I bought these from our host and they are the same on the left and right. Pelican does not list a different part number for left and right sides. I checked a few other sources and they also only list one part # for the front and one for the rear. I also checked the cast in cooling vanes in the rotors. They are purely radial and do not align with the drilled holes in the rotor. I believe the hole pattern is somewhat misleading. The swirling pattern of the holes looks like the aerodynamic shape of a rotor passage in a centrifugal compressor. However given that the cast in passage in the rotor is radial, the hole pattern should function the same fleft or right. I don't know why my Zimmermans are different than Rattlesnake's. Maybe they changed the design. Anyone else have any experience with this?? |
superb car, great colour choice too. what have you done inside? any photos?
Andy |
Looks fantastic, my favourite colour, can't wait to see the finished item.
Steve |
That has got to be one of the most beautiful car I have ever seen.
I LOVE the color! And of course being the "anal" type love the detail! Good Luck with it. I would probably never use it if it were mine....glass case most likely. MikeČ |
That is a spectacular car! Awesome job.
On the Zimmermans, I found that they cracked on my M3 after being on the track for one day. Not sure if you are going to track this car (it should be tracked) but I would go with slotted rotors for peace of mind. What I've found with directional rotors is that one side will have a part # ending in an even # and the other will be odd. Look along the hub to find the manufacturer's part number. Also, a lot of rotors come with L or R stamped on them. If the vanes point radially outwards from the hub then there is no specific direction (work the same either way). But on cars like the M3 the vanes are swirled (curved). This acts like a turbine (pump) pulling the air out of the center of the rotor faster than the straight radial vanes. Then you have to be careful of the direction. Keep those beautiful photos coming. Tristan |
Really stupid question coming, in the fourth picture from the top, what is the black bar or tube (it appears) exiting the left rear wheel well? My apologies, I am a lurker and learner.
|
Dan,
There are no stupid questions for this board, that is a factory fender brace. It bolts to the fender and the part you are seeing bolts to the body through the engine compartment. SmileWavy |
Beautiful car!

Pure early 911 goodness!!! Beautiful!
Curious why you didn't schutz the front and rear wheel housings like the rest of the underbody? Seems like there's a high probability for stone chips there. |
After owning an orange 1974 Super Beetle and an orange 1976 short box Ford van, I swore off orange cars. Now I'm swearing at the beauty of this orange car - freak'n great looking.
Quick question: Is that a aftermarket/custom tow hook? Where are the wire bar hook loops near the front suspension covers? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1109008358.jpg |
Bumping this awesome thread.....
Anything new to report? Wil |
WOW!!!
great car! |
Awesom car...what year is it?? What lift do you have? I love beautiful craftmanship!!
Steve |
The title of this thread is update #8.....
Do a search on the same title with "prior" numbers...or tom1394Racing... and you'll get the entire history..... Wil |

The car looks amazing, please tell me you've been at this project for years. :) |
Not a lot new to report. I'm struggling with the rewiring and will be putting out a detailed post soon asking for some advice. I'll include some pictures of the front trunk compartment and anything else you guys would like to see.
The tow hooks are OEM as far as I know and the lift is from Team Lift out of Texas. |
I love this car, keep the pics coming!
|
What a car, what a project, what a garage!!!!!!
