Unhappy Carrera 3 restoration

Hello to every on the board.

Well as promised many months ago here is the link to a website that I have put together to document the restoration of a 1977 Carrera 3.0

Click here to visit the site

I still need to add a few details, but there is plenty to see.

The plan was never to sell the car, however I am currently going through a divorce so the plan is to sell it.

regards

Andrew

Very nice site. I have a question that has been bugging me for a long time. I noticed you have replaced the lockpost panel. How do you recreate the factory look to the seams in this area? Do you have closeups of how you refinished this area?

cool, Andy ! Carrera 3.0 is really a great car... I'll send you pics of mine (# 9116610093).
I've never heard about specific oil pump failures ?? anyway, great website.. We've made a recensment here in France, and 've found 28 cars (Targa and Coupe), and they're supposed to be about 50 in the whole country...

Carrera 3.0 meeting

George,

I saw you're living in Switzerland... we're organizing the first French Meeting for Carrera 3.0 on May, 9th, in the Jura, near Dôle ... It would be great if a swiss car would join us !

We're planned to be about 20 cars from the whole country, and the program seems to be cool... French Porsche Magazines are supopsed to be there, and a commemorative plate will be edited.

I think it's not too far from Switzerland; let me know if you're interested in ...

The other one wouldn't ship world wide.
The wing screws are still available.

Truly beautiful car GeorgeK. I can't see the other guy's car because the site is down at the moment, but that red one totally rocks.

It shows red??
I sure hope not (no offense to the red ones). It is Continental 0range.
Loads of work there.
cary, Thanks for the pointer.

I can't really see it well enough in my bright office lighting (windows open to enjoy the nice spring day)....anyway, the color is a reference mark, the lines of that coup, the "carrera" on the sides, the tail, the ride height, the rims....those together are what I"m talking about.
the fact that it's orange would probably only add to the coolness were I to see it driving around town here...I have never seen a Carrera 3.0 in traffic before...must be fairly rare.

Hi Noah,
Yes, I'd love to have it. I will mail you for my adress.

Kurt, gotcha. Thanks for the words. I'm not sure about the 7&9X16 Fuchs, though. I'm refinishing a set of 7&8X15 in the RSR style, and thinking about these better fitting the car. decisions, decisions.

Thanks a lot, GeorgeK

Hey George,

Great car! What finish do you have on the wheels? Is that full 'rough' anodizing similar to what would have been used on RSR wheels? -- Curt

Curt,
It is an in-between.
The all gray RSR rims got no finish work on them between forging and anodising, giving them an uniform "rough" surface, but they were all 15 inch rims. the rough surface is in fact the marks from the forging dies
The ones with the black background got polished spokes and outer lips before anodising and paint, the rest of the lip being "raw" from the forging dies (see pic below, from a 9X15).
the ones on my car got polished rims before anodising, but the centers are untouched.

wow, nice resto.

i have alot of respect for you resto guys. you need alot of patience, skill, dedication etc - something i lack!

seems like areally good price. i'm surprised it cost you £15k - i guess that is because you didn't pay labour charges??

how long did it take??

sorry about the divorce - is there any chance of keeping the car??

Cool answers

My post created a few questions -

Orbmedia:
I don't have any close ups (wish I had a digital camera) the answer is I'm not sure as it was someone else that did the work, one thing though, is that as the cars got older the quality of the finishing decreased. On an earlier car 60's/70's, much more care was taken leading the seams properly, but i looked a few eighties ones and these joints are just not as nice. For example the lock panel is seamed really smooth on the early ones I looked at, whereas the later ones you can see the join. You can also see this (the difference between old and new cars) where the rear wings join the engine bay panels.

Naoh:
waxoil is just something that is sold over here in England, people spray it on the bottom of there cars to protect against the elements (we have tons of rain over here).
It is basically a wax that comes in a solvent, it dries but is still quite soft, I opted for the clear but they do black aswell, it looks a real mess once it gets muddy, but the best thing is that you just steam it off and reapply. I just wanted to protect the underneath.

It is for sale at £20,000 ($30,000)

RichardNelson:
I did a lot of work myself, stripping down, rebuiding to help keep costs down, took about eighteen months total. I could keep the car but financially this divorce is costing me dear, I need the cash really, need somewhere to live (wish someone had told me about this before I got married)

Lightbulb whale tail

in answer to the question about the whale tail.....

my car was originally ordered as a 'non sport'. This seems to have been unique to the UK market, basically non sports had no front or rear spoilers, boge shocks and cookie cutter wheels.

Interestingly my car had the green bilsteins, I know of another C3 that came with red Konis. My car also has turbo seats which were apparently a no-cost option.

The chrome window surrounds were standard in 1977 and black surrounds were an option, this changed round in 78 with black being standard and chrome an option, cookie cutters of this period were always painted.

regards

Andrew
