3.0 Carrear Vs 911 SC

OK who know what the exact differences are between a 1976 or 1977 3.0 Carrera and a 1978 to 1982 911sc.

I am aware that the Hp is different but are there any other differences.

Thanks in advance.

Michael

I'll take a stab at it... I believe the 76-77 Carrera 3.0 motor used the 2.7 case and crank, and the SC's used the 930 turbo case. I'm sure there are many other small differences too.

SCs had fully galvanized bodies, vs lower only. Dashboard air-conditioning vents and I believe the center air control counsel.

nonsense, the case was thesame(suitably modified for the 2.7 crank) as the 930 and later SC

more nonsense, early '76 were fully galanized except for the roof section, fully double Thyssen steel by the middle of the run and all '77 models.

Is the 188hp correct for the '81 RoW? All the books and charts, including Bruce Andersons, I've seen list it as 204hp @ 5900. The same as '82 and '83 cars. The fuel door on my '81 asks for 98 RON, so I'm sure the compression is up there... 9.8:1?

...and don't forget the standard fitment of the very attractive 'snorkel' headlight washers!!!

Seriously, the body differences have been covered by Bill, the only thing I would add is that early C3's did not have brake booster as standard fitment. I'm not sure when they did exactly, but I am sure it was mid to late '77 (Bill/Noah?).

Carrera 3s weren't brought into the U.S. Therefore all of them were potentially subject to the same gray-market butchering as all imported Euro 911s from '74 on. Be careful when inspecting one.

Noted and edited, there are actually several different #s for some of these cars depending on the source, even the factory #s can be misleading.

'76 no boost, '77 boost
'76 targa no power windows but last of the moveable vent windows.

ROW generally had deformable bumper tubes, US had hyd. shock
ROW had small bumper pillows US had king size

another myth, most if not all of them were brought in w/ an EPA exemtion, the DOT mods were run of the mill unbolt/bolt sort of things, many of the euro cars were run hard and put away wet, they don't pamper them like we do, but most of them have expired and/or been resurected by now

They had different fuel distributors.

As I purchased a Carerra 3.0 for my SC a while back, haven't put it on the car yet.

Let me clarify, Bill: to my recollection, as I was fairly young in those days, the Carrera 3.0 was not sold in U.S. dealership, correct? That's essentially what I meant. Yes, they could be brought into The States, but one couldn't go down to their local Porsche store and purchase one as they could a standard 911.

Well I guess I'm full of nonsense, so don't listen to me.

What does "suitably modified for hte 2.7 crank" mean? So it does use the 2.7 crank, I guess I'm only 50% nonsense.

not in '76, yes in '77 when the 6&7 x16 became an option
