distributor bushings

No info in the archives...

I tore down an SC ignition distributor last night. It has a really bad bushing. No one sells a replacement as far as I know. I want to make a new one but just thought of something.

There is only one bushing at the top of the body and not one down by the crank gear. Is this right? The pin looked like it has never been removed from the factory peen. I would suspect much less wear on the bushing if there were a top and bottom bushing.

Any recommended materials? Can I just use brass? Would oil-impregnated be better?

Thanks

Thumbs up

Howdy,

Since your in Texas, I got my ignition distributor rebuilt for my C3 engine at Pro Technik in Misourri City including bushings. Good work, advance and retard curves checked and cost was $50 + $9 parts. Web page is http://www.protechnik.com/

Job well done.

John, thanks for the link. I will contact them. Are you going to the Club race in a few weeks? I will be a corner worker on Sunday. I wish I had time to get over there more.

Tim, I did see your post. Could you make me a bushing? I don't have access to a lathe right now. That is on the list of things to get for the shop. Is it true there is only one upper bearing? Seems like there should be more than one, upper and lower.

I do not recall for sure, but it seems like there was a thin wall bushing at the lower end but there was basically no play down there, so I just made a new top one. I would have to have the distributor at my place to do it (I would have to measure the bore and shaft dia and end play) and if you lived closer and wanted to come over we could do it.

It would take me a couple hours of fiddling around to do it and then there would be the hassles of shipping and all that which I am not set up for. It would probably make more sense to send it to the place John mentioned as it sounds like it is what they do.
