"Well... ...that was odd"
 

So there I was... reversing out of a parking lot.
As I hit the brakes I hear this "crash"... I think, "oh no, what did I hit"... I look in my drivers side rear mirror and see only black. My mind, momentarily confused, reels at the darkness... ...attempting to understand just what the hell is happening. Moments later I poke my head out the open window and look down only to find my mirror glass laying on the pavement in 50 pieces.

Somehow, for some reason, my drivers side mirror leapt to its death in a most graphic fashion.

The adhesive left behind isn't even sticky.

Gentlemen, please go inspect you mirrors so this doesn't not happen to you. Mirror suicide is no laughing matter.

And, please tell me I can just order replacement glass and this isn't going to kill the wallet...

Yes, you can purchase the mirror itself....

fortunetly that left side is cheaper than the right side. I believe the price is about $85.00.....:eek: or..

Try a glass replacement shop...they may be able to cut you a mirror designed for the car.

It was a .223 from that international drug dealer. Hehehe.

LOL I know exactly how you feel...my mirror lept to its death a few months ago, I was just backing out of my driveway and CRAAASH, away it went.

I just figured it was because of the many days of near freezing changing to mid 70's by afternoon weather we have here in the winter.

BTW I believe I paid around $60 here @ pelican for the drivers mirror.

Mine did the same thing one day pulling away from a stop. For my '88 it cost $75 from a dealer. The reason for the cost is that the heating element comes as a unit with the glass instead of just the glass with some sticky stuff. I didn't want to but I paid the $75, and after that the heating worked even better on that side than the other.

those dang 993s just fall apart. They didn't make 'em like the SCs, that's for sure!

Mine lost the driver's side mirror while I was taking it for the test drive! It was weird because the black surface under it was shiny so I did a triple take on it trying to figure out what I was seeing.

The salesman became a little nervous so I chewed him down another $200 in addition to replacing the mirror. :)

Funny... same thing happened to mine last week... Just driving along, and I heard a thunk.... Looked in the mirror to see what I hit, and didn't see a mirror!

There is a silver lining though. The car is a '74 Carrera. Last year, I wanted to replace the mirror that came with the car because the glass was getting cloudy. I also wanted to buy a right side mirror, even though it's not stock, because that mirror actually does come in handy... a vendor (not Pelican, PP was NIS) sent two left side mirrors... so I have an extra sitting around. Also, because black is now unobtanium, I ended up with two chrome... but now I have one chrome with no mirror that I can scuff and send to the painters without taping off the glass...

You'll notice that in both cases the mirrors jumped when you were using them to back up.

HAHAH YEP! I LOST MINE LAST YEAR THE DRIVERS SIDE IT WAS KIND OF FUNNY AS I WAS BESIDE MYSELF JUST AS YOU WERE WHEN I WATCHEDIT FLIP OFF AND ..WELL YOU ALL KNOW WELL AND GOOD WHAT HAPPENS TO GLASS AS IT HITS THE GROUND AS 75MPH...

So I just removed both mirrors and welded up the holes.. :)
I'll but 935 style... which i like better anyhow. it was a sign from GOD! ;)

Grady, do you think silcone might work better than the factory glue?

If memory serves me there are “prongs” attached to the back side of the mirror that fit in “receptacles” in the housing. It seams that somehow these work their way out. This seems like it could be from the periodic thermal expansion and contraction. A preventive measure might be to simply push on the mirror occasionally. Removing the glass and cleaning the connections wouldn’t hurt either.

I’m amazed at the numbers on the Forum who have had the problem. Clearly this is a service item.

BTW, I was sorely tempted to buy some ’72 only items for you and Greg at the swap meet last weekend. There was an un-dented aluminum oil pipe-hose assembly (engine to the filter/thermostat) for next to nothing. Even the hose and aluminum nuts were perfect.

Ohhhh...did you happen to get the seller's name? I'd be interested as a spare, Greg probably ditto...

I see a pattern of failure to engage the "side view mirror reverse gear interlock" at the proper time. This is a very precise action that, when not properly executed, will cause the mirror to actually take flight.

No, but if I know you want spares like that I’ll keep my eyes open. Shipping would exceed the cost of the part.

I “only” came home with some ‘60s Panos and ‘80s technical lit for $10 and still was admonished as to where to put it. The house is too full.

My mirrors are heated and I assumed that the rubber adhesive with the heat was the problem.
