' 96 - '98 993 Air injection Issues

I am considering buying a ' 97 Carrera S, I have heard that there is an issue with the air injection system clogging. A local service shop told me that this causes the " check engine light " to come on and the car will not pass emissions test. I am told this requires a top end engine rebuild to totally take care of the problem. Does any one know if all '96 to '98 993's have this potential problem. Anyone's knowledge on this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff

ALL true, except that a top end is not alwayys needed. Search Rennlist 993 for this topic Rob Kwate in particular posted an easier solution

The 993tt has the same secondary air system as the n/a models but you don't hear of it as being an issue. It could be because of the relatively fewer tts or it could be a non issue. I dunno.

Again Rennlist has an active 993tt forum you might get better info there.

Do you have emissions inspections in GA? And if so, do they plug into the OBDII port or just do the sniff test? In VA they just did the sniff test, which means, in theory, you could just put some black elect. tape over the check engine light, if it were on. If you have this problem, looks like you can DIY fix it for under $300 or some shops can do it for around $900. If/when it happens to me, I'll DIY it.

Check out the Cleaning Secondary Air Injection DIY at p-car.com.

Now that it's DIY-able, I probably would have expanded my search to the varioram (96+) 993. At the time I bought it, this was a scary enough issue that I wanted only a 95. You fail CA smog if the light is on.
