I got my 88 cab with 43000 miles 2 years ago with similar mods (twin plugs) fort 38k. I dumped aver 12k in it already. It's ok because I wanted to do this and that to make it the way I like it. Remember, lots of rubber parts and such are getting on in age, so be careful. But when you slam that pedal in 2nd or 3rd; OH MY GOD It's like crack. It will all be worth it. PPI and check the timing and pinging. That can kill it fast. Good luck.

On one of the invoices I have it says
R&I Plugs found Number 6 had detination signs. Replace plug and injection. Still had problem. Found fuel distributor not function properly. Replaced fuel distributor at a cost of $1999.00 for fuel distributor and $1,125 for labor and diagnosis. This was at 60K. The fuel distributor was also replaced at 58k. Bad fuel distributor? Can I add a knock sensor or something to retard timing if detonation is sensed? How much of a worry should this be? Huck |
Yikes! Detonation is not good. Who knows what other internal damage this engine may have. I would recommend you keep looking unless you have money for a rebuild. ($12-15k).
If you go to an EFI system you can install sensors that detect detonation, but this costs $$$. I'l let the pros give more details on this. I bought my 88 turbo cab 1 year ago in very good condition with 64k miles for $32,000. It's 100% stock. Here's my baby: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1109304004.jpg |
Nice car 930addict

As far as worry goes, knock can kill a motor, especially a turbo. |
Hey 930, that's my car's sister. Nice car.
350hp930, How does you J and S knock sensor and timing controller work. can it be use with CIS. Thanks, Jeff |
I just got off the phone with the mechanic who worked on the car and added all the mods. The car also has C2 cams and what I listed as cylinder head gaskets are nyro rings. He said the detornation was only for a short period of time and it did no damage. He is going to do a leakdown and through PPI on Monday. Anything specific I should ask him to look for. He knows the car very well.

Huck:
I'd certainly bring the car for PPI to a place that has never worked on the car and has no relationship to the seller. Even without any active attempts by anyone to skew PPI results, it is obvious in such a situation, that if the owner continues to use the shop, they will not want to loose him. Also, any shop will certainly tell you that they did the mods 100% correct ... Think of it in terms of getting another doctor's opinion. Or worse, think of it in terms of divorce: You wouldn't be going to see your mother in law for legal advice would you? :D Just my two cents, George |
Why the same mechanic? I would get a second opinion. Talk to the guys on the turbo board. Lots of gear heads there. Are you on the east cost somewhere?
Flame ring = nyro ring? I have them on my 930 and there's no performance gain since it's a street car. How does that benefit you? Are you racing the car? It is great to have good things done to it but question why is it on there, race car previous life? What's causing the detonation. too much timing and it's been pushed a bit? I would really look into that. Good luck, jeff |
Definately go to an impartial mechanic for the PPI. I would rather be certain that I received an objective opinion than to loose sleep wondering about it.
It looks like they never addressed the detonation issue - swapping sparkplugs out is not going to do it. Here's an intersting thread featuring input of some very well know Porsche Tuners/Mechanics regarding evaluating a modded car and what to look for: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=177051&referrerid=18844 Good luck! P.S. Thanks for the kind words about my car! SmileWavy |
Hello Huck...
I see too many questions not answered on this car. You've got to listen to the folks giving advice here.... In the words of Look 171 and 930addict, going to the place that performed the work may not be a good idea. |

When it determines a cylinder has knocked it delays passing a false inductive signal for that particular timing event to the CDI in order to create a progressive cylinder specific knock retard. Concidering the great piston, ringland and cylinder condition on my 130K mile tweaked 930 motor it does its job well. If you would like to know more about the system I recommend checking out J&S's web site at http://jandssafeguard.com I am asking for $200 bucks for it if you are interested. |
They did address the lean issue with the Andial and the euro head. The guy got raped though- $3,125 total for a new head? Come on! I too vote for a different PPI guy, or you ask that you witness the PPI- which would keep him honest, thorough, and you'd learn a bit.

In Fort Lauderdale go see Jose at turbo works. In Pompano see Vince at Gulf Performance. Both shops have do work for me, tell them Rob sent you, they are both really good and honest.
|
I am normally based out of the Ft Lauderdale area and would reccomend Butch stokes automotive as a reliable PPI garage. 954-458-0044
Also I had a PPI done by Gokey performance who was really good and reasonable (1 man affair) 954-772-6272 Here is a link to Porsche owners club Orange county- http://www.pbocflorida.com/tech.htm Garages I would not use include - Vertex ( dirty but cheap) Scott Finlay- (not interested unless you have deep pockets!) I would also PM Juan Ruiz if the car is local to Ft Laud. as he may know the car. There are not that many older cars in the fT Laud. area unless thay are kept under wraps most of the time! You may also want to try the garages who did the mods - Proto Tech- Ft Lauderdale ??? Hope this helps Ben PS I am looking for '89 930's but coupes! - Have seen several in the 37K range but none in the S Florida area! |

Lots of good advice here. If it checks out and you want want it, then get it. Mine is coming apart this spring/ summer as I have time to play with it. I find that my garage time is as enjoyable as my drive time. Good all around therapy I guess.
It's hard not to enjoy a turbo cab. :D my 89 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1109430885.jpg |
Gulf performance is the one who did all the work to this car. They did address the detonation as they said they replaced the fuel distributor. I will try to find another shop to do the ppi. They nyro rings were just installed as a better sealing method to control oil seepage from increased boost is what the mechanic said. Felix at Gulf is the one who did all the work.
Huck |
How much boost was ran through this thing? I am not sure what niro rings are. I'll find out.
|
The car will boost just a little over 1 bar according to the Andial gauge.
