Just had a PPI and found 85% leakage at #6. All others were at 2%-3%. They said the leakage was from an exhaust valve. They are pulling valve cover now to check for a broken spring. What is a top end going to cost? I just called my buddy's machine shop and he said about $325 in machine work for all the heads (new seals, valve job and guides) Now looks like rings will be $500 and about 30 hours labor to R&R engine and cam towers along with cylinders. Does this sound right. Can it be done for $3500?

I have heard that quoted for top ends in Florida = heads only though - does it need to be reringed?
|
No but if I had it down that far I would put rings in it. That is a price from my buddy about 30 hours labor and $1000 in parts and machine work. I am calling another guy I know who runs a Porsche shop and see what he says.

Shop just called back and said they drove the car and let it warm up and rechecked the leakdown and it is now 4% or less. They checked it 3 times. He said it could of been carbon. How does this sound? ONly problem is a rear wheel bearing.

I would think that the shop would have driven and warmed up the car before doing the first leak down. I'd keep looking, unless you get to pay 5k less for a possible top end problem.

The shop is Foreign Affairs in Pompano Beach. I get a good feeling talking to them. I also called a local shop and a buddy who owns a machine shop and is big into Porsches and they both agreed it is a possibility that carbon could hold open an exhaust valve. What do you guys think.
Huck |
It's a possibility - but it's also a possibility of something else... When buying a 30k - I try and eliminate the maybe's...

You can believe what you want. If I were serious about the car. I'd get a second opinion. Just like I would if one doctor would tell me I needed serious surgery. ;)

I have to go with caution here too. Can you get another wrench to do a leakdown?
Or at the very least (we all know you really, really want it) do a leakdown while you watch, so you can verify the results. Ian |

I think it's safe to say that in our own cars we can pick the faults - in a new car we tend to look at opportunities...

If not carbon really sloppy valve guides can sometimes cause intermittent valve leakage.
Either way its better news than it possibly being a cylinder problem. Older turbos usually are in need of a valve job by the time they start approaching 100K miles. |
Well I bought the car. I had the mechanic do a leakdown while I was there and #6 was 4%. I had them do an oil change and balance the front tires. Just got home last night. Total I put about 1,000 miles on her. I mostly averaged about 80 - 85 mph and averaged 17 mpg. Best tank was 20 mpg. Much better than I thought. The car ran great and was much more comfortable than I expected on a 12 + hour road trip. Too bad the weather in Florida was rainy and too cold to put the top down. I am back in NC now and it might hit 64 today so I will put the top down. I am going to do a complete detail now. Thanks for all the help and answers. I will post some pics when I get her all cleaned up.

Congrats Huck! Can't wait to see more pics of this beauty. A turbo cab is on my list of P-cars to own sometime down the road.

Wow, only 20 MPG? At 85 I used to be able to maintain a couple lbs of boost and average about 24 MPG.

Congrats!
