Gearshift lever rotating HELP!!!!
 

77 911 gearshift lever rotates where it comes together at base.I was having trouble shifting into 5th wihtout nicking reverse.I thought it was shift rod adjustment problem. turns out the gearshiftlever is loose and rotates when shifting into reverse thus cant get in reverse or 5th. Is there a pin holding things together I couldnt see one . Anyway what do I do to fix it?

This same issue has been discussed just in the last week. Yes there is a pin. It has probably come loose or the epoxy holding the two parts of the shift lever has deteriorated.

Thanks Kurt, didnt see a pin are some years epoxyed and some pined? any one have pics?

When mine did this, I put a bit of JB weld in the coupler where the shaft sits.

I had tried epoxy but that didn't last long.

Thanks Mark, I put some JB weld where the shift lever comes together at the base. I will check it out after it sets up.

The 915 shift lever is made of two pieces. The lower piece (as you know by now) is glued. I suggest tack welding for a permanent fix (make sure they're in the correct alignment).

Thanks alot man!! I just tried the JB weld , you gest it ,it did not hold.so I will have it tack welded. I assume the correct alignment is when your in 5th and the gate is flush up agianst the gearshift lever.

I'm surprised the JB didn't work.

Did you put it around the joint, or squirt some down in the hole with the shaft out?

Yes, that's right. And if the lever doesn't fall directly at hand, you could manage a bend in the lever (with extreme heat) to improve the ergonomics.

Did you make sure that any oils were cleaned from the components before apply the JB weld? That's usually pretty strong stuff. That said, I would feel more comfortable with a mig or tig weld.
