Shock and brake questions
I am getting ready to refresh my suspension and brakes and have a couple of questions. I know I have Bilstein shocks in the rear, it's clearly marked. See pic (well, you can't see it in the pic, but it's there):
![]() I do not know what I have in the front...can anyone tell from the pic? ![]() Also, when I turn the hub I can hear a scrapping sound...it's as if the brake pad is rubbing against the rotor. This is not normal, correct? I checked all the rotors and they are within spec but I plan to repalce the pads and flush the brake system. Second, I assume the calipers are stock, are they? Last, any idea what the dark lines on the wheel well are coming from the top of the front shocks...it's on both sides. v/r Wayne C. 83 SC |

For the front, I would guess you have a Boge Strut with a Bilstein insert.

Don't worry about the scraping unless it's hard to turn the rotor. If you can spin it, it's fine. Plus, with the wheel off, the rotor is loose. Try wiggling it...

So if I want all Bilsteins then I guess I have to buy the entire struts/shocks for the front, correct? On the rear, should I buy new or have them refurb'ed?

Yup. You have Bilstein inserts in Boge strut housings, I just did this last weekend. If you want an all Bilstein strut assembly, Pelican sells them.
Check Bilstein's site, they revalve for pretty cheap.... Here is the link: http://www.bilstein.com/html/service/index.htm -Chris

Wayne,
You have Bilstiens at all four corners now. You can remove them and have them refurbished or you can replace them. There is no need to replace the front strut assembly unless it is damaged. The original Boge assembly used the strut tube as the actual shock housing. That is why they are full of oil when you take them apart, they ARE the shock so to speak. The Bilsien insert uses the Boge strut/housing to hold the new Bilstien shock insert. good luck Andrew Like chris said - i was a litle slow with my typing!
