All hail the automatic heater
 

I just reconnected the automatic heater, and it is sweet. The PO stripped the connecting rod. I now have comfortable winter driving. Why do so many people rip these out?

Hear, hear for the auto heater........mine works fine and maintains a near perfect temp ......now if i could only get the AC to work as well :(

I agree. I love my auto heat too.

Can you guys tell me what you mean by automatic heater.


I have an '83. I pull the red levers in the center to start the fans that force air through the exchangers and into the passanger compartment.

This is not what I would call automatic.

Some models came with a rube-goldberg contraption to pull the lever for you, based on the readings of a sensor between the sun visors.

Some came with a climate control instead of the two red levers, dash levers, etc.

I too love my auto heat ! .. Don't have a clue why sooo many people have problems with it..

My old 83 SC had manual heat ( two red levers ). Found I had to screw with em constantly...

Emcon5, can you post a pic of the sensor between the visors ? My sensor is a vented hole on the dash next to the heater/defrost controls ( actual sensor is in back of the ashtray )

Mine are only the semi-automatic type, but I rarely turn the numbered dial thing. I just pull up the levers. Keeps you surprisingly warm on a cold day with the roof off.

Up to 85 the 85 has a "hanging sensor" between the visors in a rubber tube.

For 86 ( I believe) and later...the sensor is located in the dash and it draws-in air via a small fan, even.....( complicated Germans !!!)...

Excellent work! Now to truly make it complete one would add the AC controls, blowers, and vents to the picture. Incidentally, my autoheat is perfect if i keep the AC thermo at the "III" position, the AC fan at the "II" position and then control the heat using the autoheat number dial (setting 3 for temps in the 40s; setting 4 for temps in the 30s)

Not enough room for all of those components too . . .

imcarthur, Great pic. Couple of things tho.. The pic is for 1987 and newer 911s.. and
According to my owners manual, *if* the car has AC, the large center dash vent is for AC only ( and so NOT fresh air ), and there would be 'extra' AC vents under the dash. As I understand it, you control which vents supply AC by opening or closing the vents with the up/down knurled knobs.. ( one cannot close the extra footwell vents tho )

question on console heater switch. My 86 has a three spped fan switch, however, speeds one and two don't work. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Actually there are two different sets of air sources under the dash in the foot well: one set is for Air conditioning (it is one source with a little diverter device that splits the air flow left and right - attached to the foot wall ) and another set located up under the dash that is a fresh/hot air source. Also the dash vent directly above the radio is air conditioned only. In further refining of your definitive guide perhaps you could use red for hot air, white for fresh air and blue for chilled/conditioned air. just a suggestion

I'm ignoring AC for this. It gets far too confusing when you include ac, fresh & heat to the diagrams - even though they are intertwined.
