Update: 71 911 - Running! (SHUIE THANKS)

Alright guys, You just won't believe it. You should remember I just purchased this 911t targa about 2 weeks ago - non running for <3000. The body and undercarriage are in very nice shape! So, before I delved into making it "look" better by doing detailing and such I decided most importantly would be to get it running correctly. After I purchased the car I brought it to my cousin's house to work on it w/ him. He, I, and my dad often work on vehicles and are pretty good at it... so I wasn't too concerned about getting it to run.

Turns out after looking at for just a few minutes.. the reason it wasnt running was because the guy who owned it before me had "adjusted the valves and carbs". His carb work was done by ear - no tools. they turned out to be way off! However, I didnt realize this until I could get it running. The INITIAL PROBLEM WAS A KINKED FUEL LINE!!! Once unkinked the car fired right up! We were amazed and moved the other cars out of the driveway to take it for a cruise to the near fuel station! We were thrilled having taken the targa top off.. just cruizn'.

The car was running but with backfiring issues. So, now running I decided to recheck the valves and correct the problem if any. Turns out he did a decent job on that, but I still re-did them all. Started the car and still ran the same

No matter.. time to look further and at "smaller" possiblities. Perhaps the carbs were out of tune... hmmm I thought. A few days later I decided to make sure the firing order was correct. And would you guess it!!! A SPOT OF LUCK! (as I say) The 4 and 5 plugs were crossed! switched them over and ran much better and smoother but still w/ backfire. I then checked the timing, which was correct.

After this I decided to adjust the carbs and get them in sync. Thanks to shuie's copying of "how to tune your webers from his book and mailing it to me. I began adjusting. THANKS SHUIE!

Once all were adjusted using a unisyn the car began to really come to life!

Once completed ---> I drove it!
WOW.. WHAT POWER! IT IS RUNNING GREAT! THIS CAR IS AWESOME! NO MORE BACKFIRING!

I have left to get some gaskets and o-rings for the weber carbs because they are leaking a little fuel from the tops. Once I get my new parts I will of course need to readjust the carbs because right now they are getting a bit of a false reading because they are sucking in some air, where they shouldn't be of course.

So, Until I get those parts... I'll be tinkering w/ my throttle cable adjustment.. it has lots of slack in it. I need to find exactly where it is coming from and make the correct adjustments.

Thanks to all of your help and posts!
Thanks again Shuie!

Later
Mitch

Congratulations!!! Like an intricate puzzle, these types of issues can be the most frustrating, and at the same time, the most rewarding.

Great job! Have fun driving it ('cause that's what it's all about).

GotaT ,
Congrads.
Sherman,
Great work!!!

I dropped mine off in Gulfport to get tuned and the oil leak fixed, I am hoping to make a trip back to BTR when it gets done, maybe we can get together.

As for ATL I am up for any run once the Rugby season is over. What weekend is that I have one week off on MArch I think?

I definitely think we will need to get together. There are about 3 others in Baton Rouge area that I think will also like to get together to "talk Porsche", and My neighbor has a 912 who I think would join us as well. So, look forward to a new post about Baton Rouge- Lafayette Meet. We'll see when we will all be available and go from there. Im really looking forward to it!

I also think when that post is up we'll exhange ph #'s of all of us in this local area to better keep in touch...
Later,
Mitch

You all need to drive out to this in May. It is a joint South Central US meeting of the longhoods hosted by the 912 registry and the early 911S registry. Should be worth the drive! We are still planning but the date is set.
