tire guys...can u explain this??

Hi folks,
I have a stock '74 with 15x6 Fuchs...old tires were 205/60's, but I've been running 215/60's on all four for the past two years. I don't track the car (this is Arkansas after all), so what am I giving up exactly with this tire? I get the feeling from reading posts that this tire is too wode for the rim even though I get no fender rubbing. If I should be running no larger than 205's...will someone chime in and school me on why? Just wanna know..

Even though tires may share size designations, variances between manufacturers mean they may still be a bit narrower, from brand to brand, in the shoulder (width) once mounted on the wheel - so you may have gotten lucky.

these tires are definitely larger than the 205's...but doubt seriously that they would stand up to track use at the limit...they're a verrry close fit.

IMHO, the 215s are a bit too wide for a 6" wheel. The narrow wheel will "pull" the sidewalls in a bit which can adversely affect the tireis contact patch on the road.

Believe it or not, 205s might actually yield better traction than the wider 215s in this situation.

A tire which is mounted upon a rim which is too narrow for its design will not handle as well as it should/could. By way of example, lets imagine a tire 2 inches wider than the rim mounted. The sidewalls, in this case would flex when the rim deflected from straight ahead (as it would when the driver tried to turn) giving you a 'mushy' feel in the handling. As you can imagine, if you look at all aspects of the tire/wheel dynamic, you might experience poor cornering, slow turn-in, uneven wear etc.
As the previous post says, you might, due to the particular size/labeling descrepancy of the manufacturer of your tire (you don't state the make), have dodged the bullet here. Your "215" might be about the same width as someone else's 205. You certainly haven't gotten so far out of the box that you immediately thought,"Man these tires are all wrong"

He's right. I know guys who run 195's on track Miatas so they can get them up to higher temps and load them correctly vs. fat tires which never seem to heat...

yeah, you guys are undoubtedly correct..i've got to be sacrificing a little performance. btw, the tires are Kumho touring tires..only rated to 112 I believe..I forget which speed letter that is.
