Can you remove the tach from a 1984 911 without removing the steering cover?

Do I have to remove that top black plastic steering column cover to remove the tach from my 1984 911 or can you gently squeeze it out?

put some tape or something on the plastic part before you start pullin - this way you wont mess up the plasic cover you have to see ......

I seem to recall there are just a couple of screws (four?) that hold the clamshell covers in place. Why not remove it and be on the safe side?

I tried to remove mine, and found that I did have to remove the cover to get the tach all the way out. Loosen the screws, pop off the cover, pull the tach.
