Can you remove the tach from a 1984 911 without removing the steering cover?

Do I have to remove that top black plastic steering column cover to remove the tach from my 1984 911 or can you gently squeeze it out?

I seem to recall there are just a couple of screws (four?) that hold the clamshell covers in place. Why not remove it and be on the safe side?

I tried to remove mine, and found that I did have to remove the cover to get the tach all the way out. Loosen the screws, pop off the cover, pull the tach.
