Serpentine Belt for 911 engine?
I am corresponding with someone in the UK who asked for some help with planning a 3.6 transplant into an SC or maybe early Carrera. He says he is having trouble squeezing in a triple belt crank pulley. He asked about a serpentine belt arrangement (wants to preserve the A/C) , and I told him I had seen one advertised within the last year or so, but I can't remember who sold it. Anybody out there remember this, and if so, who sold it? Anyone with any experience with one?
I went though the same issue a few years back with a 964 engine into a '79 SC (pictures on my website), but I used the stock 964 rear mount, and bent the ends forward, in order to preserve the room for the triple belt pulley. Thanks for any help on this, I'll pass it on.

Clewett has one: http://www.clewett.com
Hold on to your wallet, it's $750. Even at the good exchange rate, its not cheap.

Thanks. My friend said he looked at Clewett, but didn't find anything suitable. I checked Clewett's site, and their photo indeed showed a belt arragement, but on the surface, I can't see a reason to call it a serpentine belt. It goes around the crank pulley and the fan pulley like a normal belt arrangement. Am I missing something?
Of course, I could envision a longer belt than is shown, looped around the A/C compressor pulley as well. I don't know why this wouldn't work...

That is exactly what you would do. The tensioner and correct wheels for the belt are the key.

You're right Bill. I think there may be a breakdown in communication somewhere between me, Martin (the guy I'm trying to help out) and his mechanic. The mechanic may be trying to use the rear mount from the SC engine on the 993 engine, and in this case, there's probably not enough room for the triple pulley. I communicated this back to Martin tonight, and I think he's going to pass this on to his mechanic tomorrow.

Yeah! Like that! Of course I wondered why you picked that side until I scrolled down to your signature line. The motor mount should have been a clue...
Lessee, in the UK, this might be the the proper side for the A/C compressor.

Yea, I had to mount the compressor there to allow the belt to clear the firewall on the 914. It also makes it much easier to change the belt on the side of the road. On a 911, the belt and shims are right in front of you. Imagine trying to do that when you can't see the shims or the belt, and have to do it by feel. But it is going to make changing the spark plug or adjusting the valves a real pain.

The 993 cross member needs to be bent and reinforced like this
![]() I did change to the RS pulleys but they weren't necessary

Bill,
Thanks for the photo. I thought I had photos of my 964 motor mount, but I haven't been able to locate any. This should help explain it. I will forward the URL for this thread to Martin in the UK. Maybe I need to start saving/hunting for such a power plant for my next project. <http://hod.pca.org/classified/Cars%20for%20Sale/'73.jpg> P.S. I checked out your various web sites. There is a lot of good info there. Thanks for posting it.

Hey Guys,
My friend Martin in the UK has passed on the info from this thread (especially about using the stock 993 mount) to his mechanic. He asked me to pass on to the thread contributors his thanks for helping find a solution to his problem.
